Strongmen, like Trump, live in constant fear of being held accountable — which is why all of us should be concerned about what they might do to the upcoming midterms.

Understanding how strongmen triumph and stay in power for so long also means abandoning some cherished notions about national identity-for example, that Germans are the most cultured people or that Chileans are unlike their violent Latin American neighbors. Few wanted to hear Gobetti's message to Italians in the early 1920s that "Fascism is the autobiography of the nation." Likewise, many Americans dismissed the notion that Trump's racism and his obsession with celebrity and profit above all else might help him win the election because they reflect enduring traits of American society. "Every country gets the gangster it deserves," a former partisan's comment about Italy under Mussolini, may seem harsh to some and true to others.

Sometimes very hard not to feel like the rest of the country has abandoned Minnesota. We STILL have ICE everywhere. Our schools, businesses, and economy are in profound crisis. But without Bovino here throwing tear gas, much of the country seems to not care at all what’s being done to us.

Classic authoritarian logic: corrupt people by giving them an incentive to do the wrong thing. In 1933 and 1938, years of major assaults on targeted groups, the Nazis forgave the debt of other Germans to bind them to the regime.
Now, they are not just going after corporate media: they are going after independent journalists too. But always remember, there are more of us than there are of them, and they can’t silence all of us. Keep speaking out, keep telling the truth.
