InRESPONSE, CARE, and other crisis teams in our district have provided a better standard of care for our communityβs most vulnerable while also saving us money by diverting care away from the emergency room.
Each year we have to choose which things we champion in the state budget. Often times, we are playing defense. This year, one of the issues I decided to engage on is pushing back on proposed changes that will devastate our mobile crisis intervention services.
Happy anniversary to Schatβs Bakery Cafe! They have been a staple in Ukiah for 35 years.
Breaking bread with the Sonoma County Dems at the annual crab feed - 2,000 pounds of crab and a moment to honor the achievements of many of our Democratic advocates, like the incredible Pat Sabo, Omar Lopez, Melanie Bagby, and Bill Steck
Touring Willits Redwood Company with Councilmember Burton - talking about forestry practices and going over the intent and specifics of AB 2494.
What a warm reception from the Anderson Valley community at todayβs town hall - good conversations about forestry, campaign finance, rural healthcare, economic development and eco-tourism, and we even had great youth participants advocating for a new skate park.
The resolution urged the President to do his job and stop trying to punish a βblueβ community out of spite.
I spoke on the floor today in support of AJR 27. It has been over a year since the devastating LA wildfires, and the President still has not approved their disaster declaration and much-needed assistance. We know all too well how important FEMA is to local recovery efforts.
Dr. Spagna was previously the interim President at Cal Poly Humboldt, so I have been delighted to continue to work with him in his new role. I think both Presidents will do a great job for our community.
Yesterday was CSU advocacy day in the Capitol and I had a chance to sit down with the new Presidents for Cal Poly Humboldt, Dr. Carvajal, and Sonomas State, Dr. Spagna.
Weβll be starting the day tomorrow in Philo, talking to Anderson Valley neighbors about their priorities and issues.
Mark your calendar for our annual Earth Day Shindig! We forward to the good food, good drinks, and good conversations at this family-friendly event. Link in the comments!
Busy weekend in San Francisco for the California Democratic Party convention. Grateful to receive the endorsement for re-election and proud to watch our friend Mike McGuire receive it for Congress.
This law is drafted to be consistent with the County of Mendocinoβs legislative platform, as well as the Governorβs ambitious 30x30 goals.
It has been 50 years since CA updated its forest management law - long before we had any climate goals on the books. AB 2494 will update these practices - including in Jackson Demonstration State Forest - to recognize the ecological, recreational, and cultural value these lands have to our state.
Itβs good to be home!
Enjoyed speaking with Leadership Santa Rosa Class 42 today for Politics Day! Thanks to the Metro Chamber for the invite and this critical leadership program. We talked about the issues facing our budget, the drastic cuts from HR 1 and legislation I am authoring this year.
Corporate interests shouldnβt run our Democracy. Thatβs why we introduced AB 1984 - to make sure the average voter isnβt drowned out by limitless campaign spending.

Showing the team from Santa Rosa Fire Fighters Local 1401 around the Capitol today. Grateful for their service to our community!
Started my day on a panel for the California Association of Port Authorities, discussing the importance of port infrastructure investments in our district. From green hydrogen to offshore wind, meeting our long-term economic and environmental goals means investing in our maritime infrastructure now.
Honk honk! Coming through!
The bill will also allow βsweat equityβ, or volunteer efforts from groups like COAD to count towards the βmatchβ required from local governments for the assistance
The state legislature canβt fix FEMA. But we can recognize that the system leaves small/rural areas on their own. In partnership with the California League of Cities, we introduced AB1866, to prioritize California Disaster Assistance Act resources for jurisdictions that donβt receive FEMA assistance
The properties werenβt valuable enough. The damage, while devastating to that community, didnβt meet the federal damage threshold, which is calculated in dollars.
In 2022, Rio Dell experienced an earthquake that left hundreds of homes uninhabitable. Having served on a City Council during disasters, I know how important FEMA is in allowing a community. And yet, in Rio Dell, despite facing tens of millions of dollars in damage, no FEMA assistance came.
Iβm grateful to Mayor Mark Stapp and Chief John Cregan for participating as well. Great questions from the crowd!
I think itβs poetic to hold a town hall at a public library. Thereβs symmetry between the free access to knowledge, and the ability to ask your representatives questions directly. Thank you to the Sonoma County Library system for hosting the event with Senator Mike McGuire and me.
