My most embarrassing celebrity moment:
Convention center men's room.
Jim Henson walks up to adjacent urinal.
I'm paralyzed.
My studied coolness fails me.
I stupidly open my mouth and say:
"Mr Henson, thank you for teaching me the alphabet."
My mouth's betrayal is met by simple nod and wink
With thoughtful regulation we could accelerate upside of AV tech while upholding public good, promoting competition, and supporting public trust. I hope states do the work to define public good with key performance metrics and tie scaling to performance

Waymo is now blocking the only eastbound through lane on Townsend, a key SF arterial. AVs have a scaling problem in cities. This isn't just inconvenience but a loss of network capacity. Waymo cuts SF's ability to move people and goods in its streets. User convenience β system efficiency
I'm accepting that today was not a writing failure but rather a time to prune the climbing roses to process a chapter I've been avoiding
TransLink in Vancouver have such a great comms team working with their bus priority program. I love thid busting the myth of the empty bus lane π www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9gj...
I was 10, and saved money from babysitting and mowing neighbors' yards so I could buy my first vinyl. I have no regrets.

Bus lanes eliminate congestion delay. Make sure you're calculating and addressing boarding and signal delay too. Replace LOS and vehicle-delay metrics with person delay. Because our job is moving people and goods, right?
Removing transit from congestion dramatically expands career-ladder jobs accessible in 30-min commute from disinvested neighborhoods. When planning busways, measure expanded jobs access in future-proof NAICS codes
Urban busways quietly manufacture land value, because they dramatically expand the person-capacity of city streets. Cities can move 10x more people per hour in a busway, expanding employers' talent pool and thus attracting investment. The math is simple
Putting busways on existing streets are among most cost effective projects. 20% speed improvement = 20% ops savings or 20% frequency improvement at no ops cost. They're like printing cash

Don't let them destroy your social trust. Resistance means actively fostering social trust every day. Mend the torn fabric
Your periodic reminder that you need a staff that matches the diversity of your constituents. And you need to listen to your staff
The front of a Waymo that tried to pass a fucking bus on a basically one way hill because we canβt teach a robot about right of way in a SOCIETY
hey so my 35 is completely blocked by a GODDAMN ROBOT
A failed Waymo robot blocking emergency response to last night's mass shooting was driven out of the way by Austin police:
500 block of Nueces St
0:30 APD officer appears to arrange takeover w Waymo telops.
The shooting was around the corner ~block and a half (~600 ft) away.

Nobody has the right to put millions of other people in danger. Yet thatβs exactly what these drivers are doing on a near-daily basis β the top 10 super speeders in New York were caught by school zone speed cameras an average of 179 times each, at least once every other day.
It also means there's better food available in Barstow than ever before, at least if you search for Punjabi food hidden away in a logistics hub, because long-haul Sikh truckers demand the best. Highly recommended: punjabibite.cloveronline.com

Crossing Calif's high desert on the main highways means passing Amazon Prime trucks and double-stack container trains carrying Chinese manufactured products and Calif ag to consumers across North America

I'm currently distracting myself from writing by reading about Bartow's future logistics strategies

Memorial trip postscript. Mile-long BNSF and UP freight trains and the West's biggest truck traffic cross through Barstow in the high desert, connecting Port of LA and Central Valley to Salt Lake, Chicago and Texas. Barstow's logistics awed my 8-year-old self

This is skillful resistance
Obviously I need this in my transit nerdwear collection along with my @streetsforall.org Buses Do So Much tee
www.streetsforall.org/merch/bdsm-b...
While you wait for LA Metro to restock, you can get your Ride the D tee from Derek. Because you know you need some D right now
Here in SF we may hate the Dodgers but we're all competing to get an LA Metro RIDE THE D teeshirt because we love transit

I'm now as fascinated by air traffic trackers as I was by tanker trackers when the Ever Given blocked the Suez canal in 2021

Iβve been riding Muni, BART & Caltrain since 1997. Transit is San Franciscoβs backbone. We must never take these systems for granted & Iβve fought hard to fund them & make them better.
Iβll continue that fight in Congress.
