What on earth is this then? A bundle of reeds suspended from the roof of an 18th century Lincolnshire house. An uncommon sight but we have testimony from a former landowner to explain it. To find out more, join me on 2 April for The Folklore of Ancient Buildings:

he was a disabled man, on reflection in response to my reply he clearly decided we should all have our chance to overcome our own adversity just as he had done so in an impressive fashion.

Mostly faculty adjusted well to older students, one older lecturer was frustrated by our lack of some basic knowledge, which was understandable, I told him we were keen to learn if we wanted to teach us. He was very old school and a decent man, for the rest of my time there he would greet me by name

I'm another person who went to university latter in life, studied with quite a few others who did the same, changed our lives for the better. I had A levels but not in the subject I studied, others did not and took a foundation year first.

#BookHistory mutuals, pls do your magic. A student in my seminar is looking for sources on fingerprints in books. Other than Darnton's reference to inky fingerprints left on the plates of the Encyclopedie, & Folger blog posts by @wynkenhimself.bsky.social, I'm short of ideas. Do you have any? THX!

Can honestly say this was up there among the most positive experiences of my career so far. A rare, invaluable time to sit down and discuss with wonderful, interested colleagues a book that will be so much better for it.

Cannot recommend it enough.

Same, I don't believe in them, and also they are not nice. Into the 1800s some people in parts of Britain held diverse folklore beliefs, which were not quaint tourist marketing material, I think that deserves some recognition, it was a way of negotiating meaning in a less than nice world.

I mean, I don’t believe in piskies, but I still wouldn’t want to piss them off. They’re not *nice*.

Large quantities of roofing tile and brick were produced by the #legion for use at the fortress.
From about AD 100, many were stamped with the legions title, official use only. The kilns were probably located near the River Usk. πŸ“Έ My own.

The Day of the Triffids

A number of films have been donated by a former BBC employee. With these were reel-to-reel recordings made in August 1968 of β€˜The Day of the Triffids’, which had been broadcast on Radio 4 FM in June and July that year. These copies are of very high quality.

Elitism is the patronising assumption that only viewers from a particular background would be interested in watching "the arts" when the past has shown that people will enjoy a range of material so long as you put it in front of them and on a regular basis.

One of the hopes after the pandemic was that the access which was presented during lockdown to arts and culture from many different streams would continue. Unfortunately we've largely returned to the status quo.
