Jofi was Sigmund Freud's beloved Chow Chow dog, he would sit in his psychoanalytic sessions, acting as a calm presence for patients, and even yawning as sessions ended!

We also sell Jofi stuffed toys. Which we assure is a coincidence.

Happy Saturday! Today, we're remembering Alexander Gotthold Ephraim Freud (1866-1943), born April 19, 1866, in Vienna. He married Sabine Sophie Schreiber in 1909, had at least one son, and lived in Hove, England, before passing in Toronto. A life across borders.

faded, sepia-toned photograph captures a candid moment between two influential figures in psychoanalysis: Sigmund Freud and his daughter, Anna Freud. They are positioned relatively close to each other, suggesting a personal connection, likely during an outdoor setting given the faint outlines of trees in the background.

Sigmund Freud, on the left, appears as an older man with a distinguished beard, a hallmark of his public image. He is dressed in what looks like a light-coloured suit jacket or coat, with a hint of a collared shirt and tie underneath. His gaze is directed towards the viewer, though the expression is somewhat softened by the age and quality of the photograph. His posture is relaxed, yet maintains an air of intellectual gravity.

Beside him, to the right, stands Anna Freud. She is younger, her hair styled in a way that frames her face. She wears a lighter-colored blouse or dress with a darker, possibly sleeveless, overlay or vest. Her facial expression is more neutral, perhaps a slight, gentle smile. Like her father, she is looking towards the camera.

The overall lighting suggests an overcast day or soft, diffused light, which contributes to the slightly washed-out, ethereal quality of the image. The background is largely out of focus, with only the vague shapes of trees or shrubs visible, indicating a natural environment, perhaps a garden or park. The vertical format of the photograph places emphasis on the figures, capturing them from approximately the waist up. The slight haziness and visible grain further lend to the vintage aesthetic of the print.

Anna Freud revolutionised child psychoanalysis. Unlike Sigmund, she focused on children, creating a distinct therapy respecting their unique needs and expressions, often through play and art, not a couch.

Has her legacy impacted you?
