We were thrilled to join Speaker @joeshekarchi.bsky.social and other housing champions yesterday for the release of the Speaker's 2026 housing package.
This is the Speaker's sixth suite of housing legislation since 2021.

Proud to see members of the NWRI community advocating for more housing in Warren! John Mesinger, Warren resident, cites a report by Weston and Sampson in describing an all too familiar story:

Research in Honolulu found that new, market rate housing freed up older, cheaper apartments, which, in turn, became occupied by people leaving behind still-cheaper homes elsewhere in the city. This lead to decreases as much as 44% less per sq/ft in cost.
We advocate for housing of all types, including market rate, subsidized affordable, and public housing. Each type has a role to play in addressing the housing crisis.

Cranston residents, please come out to the City Planning Commission Meeting on 2/3! The proposed amendments to the Subdivision Regulations create onerous regulations that slow down housing development and target developments that could potentially create housing for families.
The Policy Kickoff was a success! Topics of discussion included minimum lot size reform, parking reform, and updating the historic tax credit. Thank you to our incredible speakers Mayor Bob DaSilva, Sen. Jake Bissaillon, and Rep. June Speakman, among others. We're starting 2026 off strong!

Weβre proud to support @neighborswelcomeri.bsky.social in advocating for practical solutions to the housing crisis that is impacting our neighbors. It's encouraging to hear that statewide ADU permits have increased by approx 1500% since 2021. Let's continue pushing for bold reforms!
It's working! Policies making it easier to build new homes in Rhode Island are starting to get results. After the state expanded residentsβ right to build an accessory dwelling unit (ADU), the number of permits issued statewide jumped from 11 in 2021 to 163 in 2024.
Join us on 1/20 for the Kickoff of the legislative season! Weβll review whatβs working to address Rhode Islandβs housing shortage and outline an exciting new series of pro-homes measures.

What will Rhode Island look like in 2050? "My optimistic vision is I think Rhode Island will actually do a good job, eventually over the next 25 years, of getting back to our roots and really allowing more housing and more vibrant walkable neighborhoods in village centers and
This is why I think a key project for 2026 needs to be giving as big a megaphone as we can to the state & local Dems who can credibly promise meaningful action on lowering the cost of housing.
No offense to Congress (or, some offense, IDK) but state & local candidates can *actually* do shit here.
We were there to align with allies calling for safer streets and vibrant communities WITH abundant housing choices. Car-centric policies can undermine livability, especially with excessive parking mandates for new homes that are near public transportation.
Thanks for having us!
The authors noted how increasingly pro-housing groups (like NWRI) have been joining forces with transportation safety advocates.
Bravo @pvdstreets.bsky.social! We had a fabulous time tabling at your recent event, LIFE AFTER CARS with co-authors Sarah Goodyear and Doug Gordon, and journalist @billbartholomew.bsky.social.
Congrats to @rwulaw.bsky.social on their successful presentations. It was a treat working with these bright and talented students on parking reform.
