Here is the misconception between what the public, funding agencies, and yourself believe a scientist does: Public: research to help saving our planet ๐; Funding agencies: ground-breaking research & next Nature/ Science paper; 1/2
Hi Rachel, no, I only attended the DOSI workshop on Friday and Saturday and returned to Bremen ๐ฉ๐ช on Sunday. I'm sitting in my office at MARUM right now.
This month, I started my #ERCStG group 'Benthic Ecological Biogeochemistry' at @marumunibremen.bsky.social that is financed by the @erc.europa.eu via my #SPYCLING project. Now, the first preprint of the group about C+N cycling & metabolic activity of ๐งฝ is published: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
Tomorrow I'm traveling to Glasgow ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ for a #DOSI workshop on cummulative impacts. In the past, I would pack a ๐ to read, now I'm downloading and packing my MSc student's final report ๐ and my PhD student's (@itziarburgues.bsky.social) PhD thesis chapters ๐.
Weโre finalizing a joint publication at the moment (hopefully submitted by the end of the week) and my colleagues already discussed new ideas for an interdisciplinary project between material sciences and deep-sea sciences ๐๐. 2/2
Iโm collaborating with the Chair of Material Sciences (LWK) of the @unipaderborn.bsky.social and 2 of its members (Moritz Neuser, Malte Dreyer) visited me at @marumunibremen.bsky.social today. 1/2
With the new sign on my new office door ๐ช, my #ERCStG group โBenthic Ecological Biogeochemistryโ at @marumunibremen.bsky.social (part of @unibremen.bsky.social) has officially started ๐ช. The group is funded by the @erc.europa.eu via my project #SPYCLING.
Michelle (entomologist) & Tanja (deep-sea ecologist/biogeochemist) depict various abyssal forms and how these are threatened by deep-seabed mining. Working in 2 different media (i.e., pen & ink on paper vs. oil on canvas) and in 2 different artistic styles (scientific illustration vs. surrealism), they will embrace the beauty of deep-sea sponges. Two media. Two styles. One deep ocean story.
Meet Abyssal Forms ๐
Two scientists turning research into art.
By day: biologists. By night: artists.

I often use my sister with a PhD in Mechanical Engineering as a translator to understand technical staff and engineers of companies that build equipment for me. Now, she told me I would get a book with diagrams and graphics about engineering as a birthday present, so I don't need her anymore. ๐
Today I explained my MSc student a bit how appointment procedures for professorships work in different European countries and her conclusion was: "Academia is a big circus" ๐ช. I replied that this was indeed what the PhD student with whom I shared an office during my PhD said about Academia ๐ .
After being relatively efficient this morning, this afternoon is a nightmare. I'm correcting and revising a draft of my student's report and my laptop crashes almost every 5-10 min for the last 1.5 hours. I have even split the report in 2 parts, so that the laptop can better cope with it ๐ฎโ๐จ.
My latest for @science.orgโa major European effort to understand the environmental impacts of deep-sea mining begins this year. It aims to answer major open questions as the ISA finalizes regulations.
I have to give a lecture in German at a ๐ฉ๐ช university in 2.5 weeks, so I had a funny conversation with colleagues: 3 German scientists living abroad for years tried to identify the most gender-inclusive German term for 'university students' that didn't exist when we all left the country years ago.
This reef is still flourishing 20 years after its original establishment. Never underestimate how long introduced species can survive with climate change. 4/4
Now, while searching for literature for the first publication based on my 2020 experiment, I've come across a paper from 2005 describing an experiment with Pacific oysters at intertidal sites at Yerseke in 2001. I think, I found the origin of the oyster reef behind the building of #NIOZ-Yerseke. 3/n
When I was a PhD student at #NIOZ-Yerseke, I was told that the oyster bed originated from a scientific experiment that introduced the oysters, but the scientists believed that the oysters wouldn't survive the winter in the #Oosterschelde. 2/n
In 2020 I conducted a seasonal experiment at the tidal flat behind #NIOZ-Yerseke ๐ณ๐ฑ. Over the years, a small Pacific oyster ๐ฆชbed/ reef was established which I used as experimental site for my metabolic activity studies of macrobenthos. 1/n
Today, Iโm presenting about #deepseamining and #polymetallicnodules at the Faculty of Engineering at @unipaderborn.bsky.social.
One of the questions is: Will I, or better the purchase department of @unibremen.bsky.social, manage to place an order for the first part of my (experimental) lab equipment before Christmas break or not ๐ค. 2/2
Last week and this week, I'm traveling a lot for purchasing field and lab equipment for my new #ERCStG group #SPYCLING, which will also benefit my current project, and to present my research on #deepseamining at @unipaderborn.bsky.social ๐ฉ๐ช tomorrow (busy preparing the talk right now). 1/2
Today I exchanged my office in the North of ๐ณ๐ฑ with one in the South of ๐ณ๐ฑ, as Iโm burrowing some equipment and discuss a new cooperation.
Thursday, 18 December, I'm presenting my research about polymetallic nodules and #DeepSeaMining in general at the Faculty of Engineering of @unipaderborn.bsky.social ๐ฉ๐ช: mb.uni-paderborn.de/werkstoffkun...
Why do we see so few squid in the abyss? Because they hide from us, pretending to be sponges!๐ฆ New paper by @alemejiasaenz.bsky.social captures a potential new whiplash-squid species that burrows between nodules at the #CCZ, world's largest region targeted for #deepseamining doi.org/10.1002/ecy....
Besides "Christmas shopping", setting up my own lab also means visiting several companies over the next 2 weeks that might build different parts of my lab & field equipment, and analytical instruments. So, I have to work on my current project in the evening/ night ๐ซ . #NewPI
Setting up your own lab (while still working on other projects in parallel) is like Christmas shopping on a 'grand scale'. Today it's all about O2 sensors (until other duties call again). #NewPI #ERCStG
After 5 years of sample collection and analysis our paper examining the impacts of an industrial #DeepSea mining trial on seafloor #biodiversity is published! Read here: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Yesterday, I visited the Department of Earth Sciences at @vuamsterdam.bsky.social in #Amsterdam ๐ณ๐ฑ to give a talk as part of the BETA Lectures Earth Sciences. Thanks ๐ to @nielsjdewinter.bsky.social for organizing the Theme 1 seminar series.
I managed to prepare the title slide before I have the first meeting of today.
