"Losing genes can be as important as gaining new ones!", explains Filipe Castro, Head of Animal Genetics and Evolution group.

"Snakes have become true experts at surviving long periods of food scarcity.", says Rui Pinto, PhD at Animal Genetics and Evolution group and first author of the study.

🔍 This genetic change may be linked to snakes’ remarkable fasting capacity.

🧬 It turns out that in snakes, the genes that encode ghrelin are missing or so mutated that they no longer produce the hormone.

💻 Scientists found the secret in ghrelin, the “hunger hormone” that drives appetite and regulates the metabolism of most vertebrates.

Snakes can survive months without eating.

But how do they manage it? 🤔

𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 is a new series where we share research from the CIIMAR community that unravel the workings of life.

It allows an effective disruption of #algae cell walls to obtain protoplast with high nutrient digestibility for use as a food ingredient and/or as feed for farmed fish and shellfish species.

This technology was co-developed by CIIMAR, Universidade Católica Portuguesa - Centro Regional do Porto, Universidade do Porto and NewEnzymes (AQUITEX).
