It’s Bad: What Now? - Nancy K. Baym, 2026

Wonderful commentary by @nancybaym.bsky.social - "It's Bad. Now What?" Manages to encapsulate what so many of the conversations I've had with other digital media scholars the last year or two have centred around. journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....

There’s a spectrum from
A) using AI as a tool for humanistic problems, to
B) using the humanities to steer or improve AI, to
C) using the humanities to describe or critique AI.
The computational hermeneutics paper is both B and C; it’s also possible to do both A and B — or all three.

maybe if humanity outsources all functional, formal, boring writing to LLMs then we get to finally embrace total grammatical anarchy as signs of humans, redo the language in leetspeak and slangs not yet imagined -- watch me produce next token with so much perplexity that oceans evaporate

I dag beskrev jeg til kollega at katter i flertall på mer enn tre eksisterer ikke i hierarkiske strukturer men i kunnskapsgraflignende sammensetninger mens 3 og mindre kun eksisterer i pseudo-hierarkiske forhold.
Hehe. Har doktorgrad i bibliotek- og informasjonsvitenskap da. 😌

If you, as a social scientist, believe that AI is now a better social scientist than you, then (a) you’re probably right, and (b) sure sounds like a skill issue, y’know?

Professional UX designers (and to extent, all creatives) are less wowed by all this because being able to mock something up quickly is a skill we learned very early on.
And the thing you do with that mock after you make it is that you critique it. Separate yourself from the object.

“Do the strategies employed by subjects of empire offer productive models of resistance and subversion?”
In the penultimate piece in our AI series, @megsmith.bsky.social offers vignettes from early modern Ireland that could suggest productive models of resistance.

USS Gerald R. Ford's toilet crisis drags on amid deployment near Iran: The U.S. Navy's largest and most expensive aircraft carrier is facing persistent plumbing problems that have left large portions of its bathroom system out of action while the ship remains deployed amid rising tensions linked to Iran. 2 days ago
According to Wang, prolonged deployment at sea undermines crew morale and mental well-
being, thereby weakening combat effectiveness.
Moreover, malfunctions in the Ford's toilet system itself further amplified the problem.
Crew members throwing objects into the toilets also exposes lax discipline within the ranks.
Wang explained that vacuum sewage systems are in fact an advanced technology and are widely used on most commercial vessels today.
However, they depend on strict compliance with operating regulations by crew members.
When personnel are subjected to prolonged, high-intensity readiness tasks, their mental state inevitably changes, making it difficult to maintain strict discipline over an extended period, Wang said.

U.S. and Iran hold new talks as Trump raises pressure for nuclear deal
The third round of indirect negotiations were taking place Thursday in Geneva as President Donald Trump threatens Tehran with possible military action.
OMG!
So the USS Gerald R. Ford, the U.S. largest, most expensive aircraft carrier en route to Iran, has been stalled.
Why?
Because of plumbing issues.
Apparently the crew are deliberately clogging the toilets in an effort to stave off WWIII!
This explains the last minute talks.
Bro, WUTT??? 🤣

Meta said subcontracted workers might sometimes review content, including films and images, captured by its AI smart glasses for the purpose of improving the "experience".
Videos, including of glasses-wearers using the toilet or having sex, are sometimes reviewed by a Kenya-based Meta subcontractor, according to an investigation by Swedish newspapers Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) and Goteborgs-Posten (GP).
"We see everything - from living rooms to naked bodies," one worker reportedly said.
Meta takes the protection of people's data very seriously, which is why their subcontractors are watching your amateur porn as they surf user data for credit card numbers.
