In April 2024, Spotify implemented a new scheme: songs with less than 1k streams per year would no longer receive royalties.

The data for 2025 was just released via Luminate, and 88% of songs have been demonetized.

Women of Funk: Essential Albums You Need to Hear Funk music is too often viewed as a male-dominant genre. But plenty of female artists, from Lyn Collins to Janelle Monáe, have torn the roof off just as hard.

Funk isn’t a just a man’s game. Since the beloved genre’s beginnings, women have been trailblazing a path through it, and breaking barriers in the process.

We are cooking up a critical listening activity this year to both improve our music listening skills and highlight local femme/queer independent artists 💖💖💖 drop us some suggestions of who we should not miss!!!

Pls RSVP through the link in our profile. This event is for gender diverse audio learners, practitioners and professionals. No one will be turned away for their gender expression, but we do ask cis men to be respectful of this space built for underrepresented genders in the audio industry.

The idea is to have interested participants preparing and giving 5-ish minute presentations. Audio playback, image projection, snacks and warm drinks will be provided. **You do not have to give a presentation to participate.

For us, community and learning support were the answer to facing a “male dominated audio industry” 💖 through our programming, we aim to make audio/sound tools and technology accessible for our gender diverse learners and colleagues ✨
