Data Visualization A Practical Introduction

@kjhealy.co has a new version of his data visualization book coming out and 1) you’d be a fool not to get it especially if you do R stuff 2) it’s gonna be even more beautiful than the first one, which is truly lovely book 3) he put the ENTIRE content on his website for free, you lucky so-and-so

Reviewer notes: In a randomized experiment, the pre-post differences are not effect estimates Reviewer notes are a new short format with brief explanations of basic ideas that might come in handy during (for example) the peer-review process. They are a great way to keep Julia from writing 10,0...

P.S. Pre-post differences are *not* valid treatment effect estimates. Why? Here's a post by @statsepi.bsky.social: statsepi.substack.com/p/one-simple..., here's a post by me: www.the100.ci/2025/01/22/r... >

When someone says β€žScientists do not want you to knowβ€œ you can dismiss everything from there on. Scientists want you to know. They are desperate that you know. They can’t shut up about what they found out and want you to know.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists and risk of substance use disorders among US veterans with type 2 diabetes: cohort study Objectives To investigate whether initiation of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists is associated with both reduced risks of incident alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, nicotine, opioid, and ot...

New in the BMJ: Our study of 600,000 people found GLP-1 drugs associated with 50% fewer substance-related deaths, 39% fewer overdoses, and reduced addiction risk across alcohol, opioids, cocaine, cannabis, and nicotine.

Peer review would be easier if we stopped treating it like combat with the authors. Results want to be free, and perfect is the enemy of good. Do the data support the conclusions? If so, that’s enough. A paper isn’t a blank slate for projecting your own ideas.

My favorite is when reviewers just give you like, 4-5 side quests/new variables to investigate for no reason other than they want to know the answer. Unless I am missing something I should have included for the correctness/integrity of my study........please just let me publish. please.

The many-to-many problem of endophenotypes in psychiatry - a biological perspective - Molecular Psychiatry Molecular Psychiatry - The many-to-many problem of endophenotypes in psychiatry - a biological perspective

Despite decades of research there are still no reliable biomarkers for any of the major psychiatric diagnoses. In this now published perspective in Molecular Psychiatry we consolidate evidence from genetics, exposome and neuroimaging research on the potential reasons underlying these failures.

The Warehouse

I’ve been thinking about how to find R packages by functionality when you don’t already know the package name.

So over the holidays, Claude Code and I built The Warehouse: a functionality-first R package directory that helps you find packages by what they do.

Give Claude a way to verify its work
Include tests, screenshots, or expected outputs so Claude can check itself. This is the single highest-leverage thing you can do.
Claude performs dramatically better when it can verify its own work, like run tests, compare screenshots, and validate outputs. Without clear success criteria, it might produce something that looks right but actually doesn’t work. You become the only feedback loop, and every mistake requires your attention.

the new best practices for Claude Code doc is really good. they chose their #1 rec very well. every CC user should be typing "Give Claude a way to verify its work" over and over on a typewriter in an empty hotel while their wife thinks they're working on a book

RegCheck RegCheck is an AI tool to compare preregistrations with papers instantly.

Comparing registrations to published papers is essential to research integrity - and almost no one does it routinely because it's slow, messy, and time-demanding.

RegCheck was built to help make this process easier.

Today, we launch RegCheck V2.
