“This piece is a handprinted limited edition fine art linocut print in blue. Handprinted in Cranfields oilbased ink onto cream/white BFK French Rives acid free archival paper. A whole other world under the waters of the ocean. This piece depicts the abundant life in our oceans just below the surface. Image size: 9” x 12” Paper size approximately: 12” x 14” This highly detailed relief print started as an original drawing which was transferred to a linoleum carving block and then the design was carved into the block, inked and hand pulled individually from the block. Because of the hand printing process, each print may have slight variations making each one of a kind and unique. Each print comes numbered, titled and signed in pencil on the front.”

Notice, #earlymodern #skystorians, the logo at the middle of the photo? The VOC (Dutch East India Company).
All the more reason to reckon with the legacies of these companies and how they integrate (or don't) with shifting ideas of globalisation, integration, capitalism, and national identity.

Poster for “Interspecies Interactions in the Visual Arts (1550-1914) Collaborations, Experiments, Oppositions” international symposium held May 21-23, 2025.
Excited to talk #animalhist with other art historians today at the “Interspecies Interactions in the Visual Arts”symposium, org by @claralanger.bsky.social and Oriane Poret. I’ll be speaking about seeking a “bird’s eye view” in avian photography, and finding (un)wanted encounters.
There is a false dichotomy drawn between "the ivory tower" and "the real world," and I'm here to report that in a post-industrial society, your real-world economy absolutely hinges on the university.
University towns are factory towns. Universities drive economic activity, not the other way around.

It’s the combination of the girl’s Sunday best attire and the soft shine of her pearls, each reflecting Verspronck’s meticulous technique. She’s portrayed as a small adult, though her subtle expression betrays the fact that she’s playing a role.
