Agreed. Conference papers definitely. Editing a manuscript for β€˜free’, fine. But if editing ends up with rewriting sections then you could potentially justify being an author and that’s where I think the inequity increases

This is interesting but I’m wary of a buddying system as it is a way that native English speakers with many papers get even more. Akin to junior researchers having to put someone senior (usually male) on a grant application to prove track record
