South African President Talks Trump, Racism and That Oval Office ‘Ambush’
South Africa's president has given an unusually direct interview about Trump, to the NYT.
“I do think the Afrikaner policy is racist... It is that racist sort of demeanor that we want to be able to whittle down so that he can see the truth of the situation.”

If employers don't pay, then the extension will massively punish migrants - especially those with families who have to pay the cost for each family member - and those with lower salary prospects.
It's truly a nonsensical strategy.

But that cost will fall back on the state. Some workplaces, like universities, will bear that cost. But as we all know, UK higher ed can't really afford that. It will be the state inefficiently taxing both itself and the private sector.

As someone who just got a skilled worker visa, I feel like there's another motive. If you can get settled status after 5 years, you only pay one round of skilled worker visa fees + NHS surcharges. With 10-15 years for ILR, the government will make ~£6-12,000 more on each migrant.

If you can maybe see Kilimanjaro from the easternmost part of the Serengeti migratory region on a clear day in the distance, then the metaphor of moral clarity isn't so clean...and I think it's been well documented that the band didn't know anything about "Africa" when they wrote it

Almost like saying the rocky mountains rise above Kansas City. Technically they are above Kansas City, but it shows a lack of geographical awareness to say KC and not Denver.

So Kili does rise above a plain - I've seen it. Very beautiful. It's just far enough away that you can't see it from the Serengeti.
I think it's safe to assume that they're paired together because they're in the same country and both known, even if they're several hundred kilometers away.

Also I'm pretty sure Mt Kilimanjaro isn't in the Serengeti so that may be part of the Derrida-esque reading of the skepticism. What is morally right is actually what is factually dubious?

This paper with @pruett.bsky.social, @sabrinamkarim.bsky.social and Dao Freeman was an interesting piece to work on. It was my first time working on a field experiment and taught me a lot about how field experiments interact with the messy world around them.

Another answer: the list is all American authors. Americans consume American cultural products at a higher rate than they do non-American English speakers. Lessing is (a critical) product of a different cultural hegemony who is less legible to Seattle readers than Le Guin or Morrison or Baldwin

So your husband was on the right track, even if the preparation was wrong. And corned beef can be deceptively tricky. I once remember trying to make it in the UK and realising too late that they don't wash the salt off their corned beef before selling it...the meal was an inedible salty stew

Is Corned Beef Really Irish?
The rise and fall and rise of the traditional St. Patrick's Day meal
As a Jew who grew up eating corned beef, I can say pretty confidently say that corned beef is also firmly established in Ashkenazi Jewish cuisine! Eating corned beef on St Patrick's Day came from Irish Americans getting cheaper kosher deli cuts in the US. www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture...

For some reason predatory journals (and similar things) have latched on to book reviews that I've written. So they invite me to submit something based on... other people's work.

APCG Online Colloquium Call for Papers - Fall 2025 & Spring 2026
The APCG Online Colloquium is designed to increase opportunities for scholars of African politics to present and receive timely, constructive feedback on unpublished work. Colloquium sessions will be ...
Great forum to present some work and get some feedback if you have a paper on anything on African politics. Given its virtual format, it's a great place for junior scholars and scholars based on the continent to do an hour long workshop-style discussion of a paper!
