Everyone, hail the Pumpkin King! ๐ŸŽƒ

While we were scanning a larvacean with lasers to create a 3D model of the animal, we noticed a jack-o-lantern-like face appear for just a split second. We decided to nickname this the jack-o-larvacean as our underwater mascot for Halloween. ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿงช๐ŸŽฎ

Acorn worm โ€ข Animals of the Deep โ€ข MBARI Acorn worms move along the deep seafloor feasting on organic material and locking away carbon from the oceanโ€™s surface.

โ€œEnteropneusts are actually more closely related to humans than to worms. They have a rudimentary nerve cord similar to ours and breathe oxygen using structures similar to a fishโ€™s gills,โ€ according to @mbarinews.bsky.social.

This week we had a โ€œWaitโ€ฆ is that coral?โ€ moment.

At first glance, that icy fan shape seems coral-like. We think this might be in the genus Walteria, a type of glass sponge (Phylum Porifera). These sponges come in all shapes and sizes, so even experts can find it challenging to identify them. 1/4
