RNA-specific local translation is patterned by condensates for multinucleate cell growth - Nature Cell Biology Geisterfer, Jalihal et al. show spatially distinct effects of Whi3 condensates on target translation in Ashbya syncytia. In vitro, translation is enriched at condensate–solute interfaces but repressed...

Condensates are powerful ways to break symmetry and cells do remarkable things with them. Here we show that in a multinucleate fungus, a condensate regulates translation of a cyclin and a formin in distinct locations.

NSF officials break silence on how AI and quantum now drive agency grantmaking Leaders acknowledge White House role in controversial moves

The National Science Foundation is systematically being converted to the National AI and Quantum Research Foundation.

β€œI see it as the administration exerting political control over what has traditionally been NSF’s ability to fund the best science.”

This post is about biologists' obligation to speak up for trans rights, in case I need to spell it out directly.

We quantitatively evaluated the swimming and flagellar movement of Chattonella, a red-tide alga.
Chattonella has two unequal flagella, and we found a positive correlation between anterior flagellum length and swimming speed. #protistonsky

Fun find in the free library at work: Greg's Microscope. Never knew this existed. Warms my heart to see some ciliates in a children's book.

Does tubulin acetylation dictate organelle behavior? We used quantitative multispectral imaging to simultaneously profile 8 membrane-bound organelles and decipher how tubulin acetylation shapes organelle architecture and interaction networks during neuronal differentiation. 4/9

During #NeuronalDifferentiation, #organelles dramatically reorganize. #Microtubules are essential tracks for transport. But are they just highways, or can they instruct organelle behavior? Are tubulin modifications a regulatory code that guides organelle position or function? 1/9

To me the chatbots pose zero interesting questions about the β€˜nature of selfhood’ but dozens about the nature of manipulation. Here the Claude team pretends they are programming the robot for ethical responses but they land on one that is false and disingenuous.

San Francisco joins nationwide anti-ICE walkouts with Dolores Park rally Protestors will converge this afternoon at San Francisco's Dolores Park as part of the national strike protests targeting ICE.

San Franciscans were poised to walk out of workplaces & schools on Friday, flocking to Dolores Park to join the national "ICE Out" strikes.

A few hours before things start, the only visible signs were "ABOLISH ICE" stickers plastered over street signs.

Our lab will be boycotting biotech vendors that have contracts with ICE (e.g., Fisher, Agilent), and telling them why. If you google β€œvendorname usa spending”, you can see purchases for specific depts including ICE on usaspending.gov. Please talk to your labs and email your vendors!

This is all stupid bullshit but I remain pretty disgusted at how things like marriage and having children are treated like Xbox achievements instead of actually loving and caring for someone else. My sister-in-law's dad died last week, in hospice in the VA hospital in Minneapolis. I just learned Alex Pretti was part of his care team. They shot Alex less than 1/2 mile from my niece's house while doing the same observation work that my niece is doing. These are real people. Step up folks!

If Books Could Kill
Have you ever come across a book, most likely a self-help or motivational book, flipped through a few pages and thought, There’s no way people are falling for this crap, right? And then you find out that the author of that book just appeared on a podcast or nine. Turns out they’re the star of the moment, and their grand theory about whatever pop psychology du jour is making the media rounds. But, seriously, no one’s falling for this, right? Right? Thankfully, If Books Could Kill tactfully takes down these books that are often heralded as works of genius when in reality they are, to put it diplomatically, maybe not as deep as they think they are. And it’s not just mean-spirited hating. The hosts, Michael Hobbes and Peter Shamshiri, are sure to back up their claims with thoughtful research for counterarguments. But, sometimes, you also just have to call out bullshit when you see it.
