Our paper about the flow of nocturnal bird migration through Colombia is finally out today in #ProcB! Using weather radars operated by the #IDEAM, we found that low variability in wind underlies a pace of migration that is far more gradual than at temperate latitudes. #Ornithology πŸ“‘πŸͺΆπŸ‡¨πŸ‡΄

Total solar eclipse triggers dawn behavior in birds: Insights from acoustic recordings and community science On 8 April 2024, a total solar eclipse disrupted light-dark cycles for North American birds during the lead-up to spring reproduction. I have to fan-girl for a minute here. My friend @rosvall-lab.bsky.social built an app to gather data on bird behavior during the 2024 solar eclipse. 10,000+ citizen scientists contributed (including my kids), and the resulting paper was published in Science today!

North American bird declines are driven by reductions in common species Declines in North American birds are driven not by rare species vanishing but by sharp losses among formerly common species.

🚨 First PhD chapter is out! My work thus far, with @andy2dobson.bsky.social

We found that formerly common species have declined the fastest, on average.

I found a non-exhausted list of Indigenous radio stations that you can donate to in order to keep them afloat after the defunding

Hey, KOTZ in my hometown could use some support. This one radio station serves an area the size of Indiana, as in, it's the only radio station in the entire area. The area is also primarily Inupiaq.

The bill republicans passed will raise your electricity bill. It will raise how much you pay at the pump. It will make our grid less reliable. Every time you fill up your tank or pay your utility bill for the next 10 years, when you notice how much more it is, think back to this bill, today.

The bill has passed.

Republicans are going to push insane lies. Talk to people about what this legislation does. Post. Be a nuisance. Don't let the lies dominate. We will make sure this vote sticks to their foreheads, is all anyone sees of them, the cruelty and evil they're drenched in.
