Why do we keep bailing out roads? Highway 101 doesn’t make money — doesn’t even break even, and yet we keep pouring money into it.

My son riding his bike on a gravel rail trail
My 5-year-old was happily biking ahead of us and stopped at a stop sign. We watched from 30 feet behind as an SUV sailed through their stop sign without stopping and without even slowing down or looking up. My son had the right of way. If he had gone - my heart can hardly bear thinking about it.

A quick post from me on Crooked's substack @crooked.com on how the Republican appointees on the Supreme Court enabled Donald Trump's attack on the independence of the Federal Reserve Board.

Limbs that fell from a sequoia redwood during a storm.
Fallen limbs under a giant sequoia redwood tree.
Giant sequoia tree in Garfield park.
Garfield Square might lose another Giant Sequoia redwood. This one took a beating in the storm last night and lost a lot of limbs. This part of the park is closed this morning.
Scaffolding leaning onto power lines.
Found out why we and a lot of others in the Mission don’t have power this morning. Scaffolding fell into the power lines around 6am during the storm at 25th and Alabama.
Can't wait until this mistake gets corrected.

Stunning blues, orange, and pink colors in the sky.
Beautiful sky in San Francisco this morning. This is from Garfield Park, and that’s Bernal in the background.
Cargo bikes are the ultimate parental cheat code in San Francisco.
Tonight the traffic to pickup my younger kid from school was insane. Would’ve taken me 20+ minutes to drive. Made in just under 8 minutes on the bike.
More parents would do this if they felt safer, @daniellurie.bsky.social
Maybe a raised crosswalk could have helped. And maybe if this person had to pay a fine for reckless driving at some point, they'd change their behavior. Or maybe their car shouldn't let them floor it while inside the city limits on a residential street.
Forgot about this dude the other morning. Spotted him during my morning school drop-off ride. He was already driving erratically, and then he suddenly gunned it and passed the car in front of him. Not sure how to change that kind of behavior.
There is no such thing as free parking.
Frost at Garfield Park this morning. Dreaming of a White Thanksgiving, San Francisco?
I witness a lot of bad driving while biking in San Francisco, and I capture some of it on video. Here's a trip on Polk Street where 10 drivers used the "bike lane" for parking. This is normal for SF bike lanes, which are mostly unprotected -- or protected by plastic straws.

It’s an old Packster 80. I love it. Rides great and even better with a full load.
12 Large Pizzas. No toppings lost!
San Francisco has a serious problem with drivers running red lights. I see it every day. Red light cameras can help, but we don't have nearly enough of them to make a dent in the problem.
Here are a few examples from the streets of San Francisco.
Be careful out there.
