My colleagues at ACRLog wrote short tributes to the life and work of Fobazi Ettarh @fobettarh.bsky.social. I wrote about her work on disability, which I think deserves more recognition. acrlog.org/2026/03/04/t...

Close-up photo of a black leather shoe with a decorative metal buckle. The shoe is heavily damaged, with the leather torn open across the top and fabric exposed and frayed. The shoe is resting on a white chair over a tiled floor, with part of a wooden stool and someoneβs legs visible nearby.
First victim of the puppy. Guess whoβs never had a puppy big enough to actually destroy a pair of shoes before? π’

Public, private higher education Holt also introduced House File 2488, which would put Iowa Tuition Grant dollars on the line for private higher education institutions that open or maintain offices of diversity, equity and inclusion. Brown-Powers said the legislation is a βgross overstepβ of the Legislature into private colleges, many of which are affiliated with a religion β described by her as a tenet of DEI. βIf we implement this bill and remove the Iowa Tuition Grant Program, we will see our private colleges failing across the state of Iowa,β Brown-Powers said. Holt said the objective for those in support of the legislation is laid out in the bill itself β colorblind, sex-neutral admissions and nothing else thought of than merit, which he called the βultimate goal of the Civil Rights Movement in this country.β The bill passed through the House with a 57-34 vote.

We espouse a lot of grand ideals about the need for an informed citizenry, the importance of education, the value of free speech & expression & the promise of equality. And public libraries in more than 500 Iowa towns, big and small, are fulfilling them all.
