In 15 cases an adult searched a child of a different gender.
The cases were filed in 19 states. Indiana had the most, with 6. We found 10 states that limit or prohibit strip searching at school. But many state laws address searching lockers or personal property, not strip searches.
We found a pattern of schools not calling parents before conducting searches, which range in invasiveness: 12 students were forced to lift their shirts or pull down their pants. 6 were forced to remove underwear or strip naked. 5 stripped to their underwear. 3 involved examining a child's genitals.
These searches were largely done by school staff: administrators, nurses etc. and most were for items that weren't an immediate threat, like vapes, drugs or missing money. In 12, officials were searching for signs of abuse themselves instead of reporting potential abuse per mandatory reporting laws.

The 2021 Supreme Court decision Brnovich v. DNC reinterpreted Section 2 of the VRA, which prohibits racial discrimination in voting practices. We analyzed 579 federal voting rights complaints and found that after the decision, Section 2 was 60% less likely to be cited in complaints.
