We've met human needs!
Humans need Transit Signal Priority!
Thank you!
We got a thing with our names on it for being good at Transit Signal Priority tonight. πππ¦
Forgot to post the games played last Tuesday at our public game night.
Mamma Mia (Uwe Rosenberg)
Agricola (Uwe Rosenberg, no pic)
Moon Colony Bloodbath (D. Vaccario)
And pitched my trick taking traffic signal themed game I hope to have ready for NACTO.
Imagine staying on until the end only to find the item you wanted to comment on is no longer a thing.
*add lane condition (not add label)
Not an add label condition? Still not impossible, but you now need to start using ped overlaps and dummy phases with isolated ped button wiring and logic steps. But two way ped movements are possible!
Phew!
In an add lane condition, you can pull out the slip lane and ped phases into ring 3 and run it independent of the rest of the signal. Want the peds on a hot button? Easy!
But you need two pieces of information on direction and potentially a large refuge island.
Slip lanes are unpopular...but they're also hard to make work well for pedestrians as considering 4 different movements can be nearly impossible.
Which has almost led me to believe the best slip lane for peds is in an add lane condition.
We need to bring back more traffic signal informational videos!
Our one and only half signal/PHB was installed about 14 years ago.

Madison is a candidate for this year's Strong Towns award. I know how much you like voting Madison, you know what to do!

I get great joy loading my 12 8'boards into my sedan comfortably and watching truck owners not able to do the same in their trucks.
Traffic signal controllers are so much fun. This is a very simple logic statement that just says 'if that button is pushed when a certain phase is timing, call a different ped phase'.
This saves a lot of time for the person crossing, and is pretty easy to implement.

...that phase to activate the red truncation operation.
The BEST scenario for our setup is to have an optional leading transit phase in addition to the coordinated transit phase. EWA - First was great for this...but then had the issue of drivers jumping the gun and causing collisions.
I still say that it's beneficial to start with the left turning vehicles for how we sequence our signals. The left turn phase can gap out and is a variable timer for the adjacent ped interval.
If lagging, it cannot gap out and the ped phase ending is fixed meaning no opportunity for shortening....
Maybe something like this is easier to read.
Idk, that sounds fun too.
What?! Thats wild.
What system is this and did they theme their entire system around space?
Yes, which is why I personally dont consider phase insertion/rotation as an SCP strategy. Extensions are a bit Grey.
Maybe a better way to ahow this is trigger method --> response
Extension/truncation is the action of the SCP system. How you get there is either the central, local, or detection based trigger.
I view rotation/insertion as different than skipping just because of how we trigger it.
Still brainstorming this.
Just putting my thoughts together on how I organize this in my head to better explain it in the future.
A general question I have is what does "coordination" mean? Coordination mode? Use of system detectors to operate traffic responsive? Or queue coordination?
Edited my response: it follows NTCIP. I had to dig into what NTCIP 1211 says and my interpretation is that a signal in transition is still in coordination.
I don't know what to call this...a map, a hierarchy, something else? Either way, putting some thoughts on transit signal priority together. I think this covers all the strategies used in Madison, but there are likely more.

Mad Signal = Madison owned and operated traffic signals.
RRFB = Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons.
Who wants to buy a state department with me? I promise to improve downtown development and city streets project coordination.
