Nice to see "Democratic discontent in old and new democracies" (Dahlberg, Linde & Holmberg) is among the 20 most cited articles on both "Democracy" and "Government" in the last 10 years. At least according to the new IPSA Companion to Political Science (open access) link.springer.com/referencewor...

This analysis reveals that the positive net effect of PRR inclusion stems from rising satisfaction not only among PRR voters but also among conservative and Christian democrat voters. Interestingly, we find no significant negative impact on most left-leaning voters.
The analysis shows that PRR inclusion in government has a positive effect on satisfaction with democracy (parliamentary representation has no significant effect). To examine potential mechanisms that can explain the positive aggregate-level effects we conduct individual-level analyses using the ESS.
To examine the effects of PRR representation we apply recent panel-data methods (panel matching and generalized synthetic control, as well as time-series cross-section regression) to a dataset on PRR representation and satisfaction with democracy in Europe spanning five decades.
Earlier research provides conflicting expectations: Some studies view PRR parties as vehicles of discontent, others as correctives to the waning representational function of mainstream parties.
In this "new" article published in @jeppjournal.bsky.social, Atle Haugsgjerd, @rubenmathisen.bsky.social and I examine how political representation of the populist radical right (PRR) in Europe affects citizensβ satisfaction with democracy.
