When we switched to an EV, not having to keep track of gas prices was an even bigger relief than not having to go to gas stations at all.
If you're wondering how bad things were at Pixar for women, the answer is pretty horrifyingly bad.
In a victory for Voice of America staffers, a federal judge ruled that Kari Lake unlawfully ran the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM) for several months last year. The mass layoffs and other actions undertaken during that time “are void,” the judge wrote. https://cnn.it/46LPSTM
“We don’t have to look for an individual... I think the counter to Trump always has been and always will be civil society. A lot of the left wants social change to look like the French Revolution or Che Guevara. Maybe changing the world is more like caregiving than it is like war.”

With tomorrow's highs in the 80s, the LA Marathon is letting runners bail at mile 18 and still get a finishing medal. But how will LA28 handle the Olympic marathon at the end of July in what will almost certainly be hotter weather?

The problems were “all too obvious,” but the didn’t see them. “They came in thinking this is cool and it has Elon Musk attached, so it’s inevitable.”
Now, replace “Elon Musk” with “AI.”
(In the sentence, not in reality… although…)
“We want to believe that progress—in all its forms—is born from audacity alone and does not also require collective action, patience, and occasional sacrifice. We want to believe that big things can be easy instead of hard and that belief itself can make them so.”

“Popular culture has long elevated certain women by portraying others as rivals, obstacles or villains,” Hannah wrote. “Isn’t it textbook misogyny to tear down one woman in order to build up another?”
I’ve seen too many great docs to just just choose one, so I’ll go with the first one I remember watching, Hoop Dreams, and the most recent, the Oscar-nominated The Perfect Neighbor.
the Austin mass shooter was a Tesla employee who assaulted a coworker during a company-allowed prayer break late last year
the company refused to give the victim her assailant's name so she could press charges, and he went on to become a mass shooter

GOP leaders had called for Gonzales to drop his reelection bid… but not for him to resign his seat in the Senate’s narrow majority.
Holy Moses, let us live in peace
Let us strive to find a way to make all hatred cease
There's a man over there, what's his color? I don't care
He's my brother, let us live in peace

2004 ATHENS Reports on construction for the 2004 Games describe worksites staffed largely by migrant workers from Eastern Europe and South Asia. Investigations documented minimal supervision, lack of protective equipment, and poor safety conditions. While the Greek government reported 14 worker fatalities, on-site observers asserted that the actual number was significantly higher, with estimates reaching up to 40 deaths across Olympic-related projects. 2008 BEIJING Reports on preparations for the 2008 Games indicate migrant workers faced exploitative labor conditions, including long hours, unpaid wages, and absence of formal employment contracts. Due to the workers' lack of legal residency status in Beijing and lack of contractual documentation, they reportedly had no meaning avenues for legal redress for labor violations. 2016 RIO According to reports on the 2016 Olympics, labor trafficking reached particularly high levels during the construction phase. In one documented case, 11 men were trafficked from other parts of Brazil to work on Olympic venues and the athletes' village. Reports state the workers were not paid the promised wages and were housed in dilapidates, rat-infested buildings, exemplifying severe exploitation during the Games' preparation period. 2020 TOKYO A report from a global union federation detailed extensive alleged labor rights violations during construction of Tokyo 2020 Olympic facilities. The report found low wages, excessive overtime, and weak grievance mechanisms, contributing to a pervasive "culture of fear." Workers at the Olympic Village reported being required to work 26-28 consecutive days. 2024 PARIS Reports and testimonies from undocumented migrant workers involved in building infrastructure for the 2024 Games reveal significant labor rights violations. French labor inspectors found 1 in 6 workers at an Olympic construction site was undocumented, with many reportedly required to work outside the protections of French labor law.
This detail from the Sunita Jain Anti-Trafficking Initiative's report, embedded in @awalkerinla.bsky.social's latest essential read, makes me think it's long past time to establish a permanent site for the Summer Games, and one for the Winter Games, to reduce both waste and exploitation.
"The research makes it clear that major events bring increased risks of labor trafficking. But if LA28 is doing anything to address those risks, they certainly aren’t telling the public right now."
