In contrast, coastal cities like Montevideo and Buenos Aires benefit from wind-driven dispersion, yet still exceed WHO thresholds due to persistent local and regional sources.
Santiago emerged as the most polluted city in terms of NO2 and PM levels, exacerbated by its topographical constraints and cold-season heating.
Clear seasonal patterns were identified, with JJA and dry conditions being linked to elevated concentrations of PM and NO2, particularly in cities affected by heating emissions (e.g., Santiago, Montevideo) and biomass burning (e.g., Bogotá, Quito)
Despite some progress in reducing PM and NO2 levels, particularly in Bogotá (30% PM10 reduction) and São Paulo (20.5% PM2.5 reduction), none of the cities meet the WHO air quality guidelines.

Adequately addressing the climate crisis demands a full systems transformation — and transportation remains at the center of that shift.

For something really ambitious, take a look at how Bogotá changed the way people move through a city of 8 million with its revolutionary Bus Rapid Transit system. (Post written by @dhidalgo65.bsky.social :

This week, marks the 25th anniversary of TransMilenio.
It turned a chaotic "system" of busetas, competing for passengers on the streets of Bogotá, into the largest bus rapid transit network in the world.

Today, BRT is part of the public transport networks of 191 cities around the world, and 32 million passengers are carried on 6,000 kilometers of BRT lanes every day.

Public transportation violence affects mobility.
Women experience more sexual violence, particularly during the access and waiting stages.
Longer walking, waiting, and in-vehicle times increase the likelihood of violent incidents.
