These recs might seem a bit scattered but trying to avoid stuff from the same genre. Not trying to speak ill of ergo proxy, ghost in the shell, texhnolyze, etc. But if you go into those and immediately try to compare them to Lain, you will be disappointed. Speaking from experience. Lain is the GOAT

Honorable mention to Girls Last Tour. The anime is nice and really comfy, but I personally recommend reading the manga. The last 2-3 volumes aren't covered by the anime and that's when it really starts getting existential.

Chiaki also wrote for Hellsing (2001) but the OVA Hellsing Ultimate is better.
