Her patron is called "The Resentment", she was bound to it when her parents made a desperate deal with a hag without fully understanding what they were giving in return! Part of her using those powers for good is defiance of a fate she didn't ask for

In hindsight, when I first looked at absolute Batman, i was skeptical cause his proportions were giving me Frank Miller batman vibes (which i despise), but turned out to be one of the most human and heroic depictions of the character in decades, on top of being actually kinda hilarious to read
