The AFI Should Bring Back Its Top 100 Movies List It helped create the canon for a generation. Then it stopped.

I recently found myself thinking about the AFI Top 100, and what a huge impact it made on me, and wishing it had continued. Bring it back!

I also rewatched the original broadcast of the list and let me tell you: THAT is a DOCUMENT. You will not believe some of the faces that pop up in that thing.

I am annoyed that the US press has been leaning so hard on “all three girls are medal possibilities!” and didn’t say that they’d have to skate absolutely clean and to hit the gold would require multiple people who had a lot of experience to mess up.

Despite it being a YouTube clip, played on phone speakers, and a truncated version of the song… I still started weeping within ten notes. I saw this back at the Encores gala and am so happy more people can hear this man perform this song. He’s astonishing.

Frequently wrong about themselves Sure, there are complex psychological issues at play, but surely people can at least be trusted to tell you about themselves, right? Unfortunately not. A particular AAA developer I know of once sent surveys to 1000 players asking them which game they had played the most, then compared it with the data of what they had actually played. Not a single one answered correctly. Zero out of one thousand players could remember their own habits enough to tell which game they’d played the most. Player answers were so consistently wildly wrong that the team involved thought that their data must have been corrupted. Upon validating that it was in fact accurate, they went back to the players and told them what their actual most played games were, and every single one said something along the lines of “OH! Right. Well, that makes sense”. When people tell you things they’re really telling you the stories they tell themselves about themselves, and those stories may not have anything at all to do with reality.

I am reasonably certain (and this is why I will never make a pundit or a politician, because those folks have to make grand pronouncements with no qualifiers or intrinsic admissions that they might be wrong) that the current wave of scammers using Al slop to flood Amazon, etc., with terrible "books" under ablative pen names is going to drive a return to readers seeking out hand-selling, personal recommendations, word of mouth, and physical bookstores where you can browse. Publishing has always been a reputation economy--"I liked the last Ann Leckie book so I am going to buy the next!"--and the proliferation of slop is only going to drive that. People who buy some generated crap and get ten pages in will never buy another book by that "author." Which is why the con artists doing this (not to be confused with the much, much bigger con artists pushing it as a business model, who terrifyingly make up a third of the market value in the United States right now) have hundreds of pen names.

It is the exact equivalent of the widgets you find in online stores sold by a company rejoicing in the branding of RandomSauce Bunchanumbers, which, you know, I probably wouldn't let kids or cats play with once you discover it doesn't work because who the hell knows how that's gonna fracture. It increases brand reliance, and an author name is a sort of brand. What does this mean? Nothing new, really. If you are a real person and you like a book also written by a real person, tell a real-person friend. Maybe by getting together in person and going out for coffee, if they live somewhere close to you.
