An absolute joy talking at @tulliecarlisle.bsky.social today: fabulous museum with a top notch team, an engaged audience and a lot of thoughtful questions afterwards. My favourite way to spend an afternoon!

An evening celebrating the landscapes of Northern England 👇

Next week at @tulliecarlisle.bsky.social I'll be performing with Wainwright archivist Chris Butterfield, who'll be doing an immersive talk on A.W. himself.

A round-topped arch in red sandstone in a sort of gatehouse, with an old coat of arms for Carlisle (apparently used between 1885 and 1924) laid as a mosaic in the paving. Through the archway is visible the end of a red sandstone building (marked 'PUBLIC LIBRARY' and dated 1893) with a large white T in front of it. A tree and white buildings are further off. The summer sun is casting shadows on the ground.

Had a wonderful evening at @tulliecarlisle.bsky.social yesterday for the Private View of the final leg of the touring Gladiators exhibition! Not only that, but you can enjoy two Roman exhibitions in one with the fantastic “Uncovering Roman Carlisle” alongside. Highly recommend!

#Roman wild boar sculpture carved from local red sandstone, with local character I feel.
The boar was symbol of 20th Legion - Legio XX Valeria Victrix, instrumental in building Hadrian's Wall, Chester fort + much more; stationed in Britain till early 4th C.

A large brownish red sculpture of a snake in a spiral, with top end and head twined around a pinecone. It's quite coarsely finished and looks to many like a tall pile of poo.

Three small copper alloy figures of dogs. Larger one is 3D, with tail curling over its rear, head raised and right paw extended as if to shake 'hands'. Two smaller ones are flatter, to serve as brooches. Both have long ears, pointed noses and are in running position. Top one has gold coloured spots enamelled on body and a greenish enamel eye. Bottom one has some surviving blue enamel that coloured the body, and a blue eye.

An abstract painting with vibrant vivid colours. Reds, oranges, and pinks dominate the canvas in a circular, swirling pattern, layered atop one another. Deep purples and light blues occasionally peek through from beneath.
