I am thrilled to announce the European Summer School on Eye Movements! #ESSEM2026 takes place 7-12 September, 2026, at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, Kingβs College London. Further details including info on how to register can be found here: essem2026.org
Interesting patterns are across NDs especially looks at the eye-region. We propose that CU traits reflect a transdiagnostic developmental construct shaped by early attentionalβemotional mechanisms, rather than a disorder-specific identity.
π£ Paper alert: We reviewed callous unemotional (CU) traits across neurodevelopmental disorders (NDs). Individuals with CU traits consistently show atypical gaze patterns (reduced looks to the eyes), when viewing fearful faces.

The ADHD+ ASC, interesting profile, so read the paper!
This work was done with the help of Lilia Albores-Gallo, Ivonne Leon, Patricia Zavaleta, Consuelo Romero and Leslie Mireles. Thanks to the schools for their great support Instituto Becquerel, Colegio Madrid and Colegio de la Mora
Key findings:
ADHD ->poorer WM+ high RT variability
ASC -> selective emotion recognition difficulty
Most exciting: scalable cognitive testing works in LMIC contexts, supporting earlier identification & referral.
π¨New paper! We examined face & emotion id across ASC, ADHD, ASC+ADHD and typically developing children using
The Gorilla exp builder, reaching diverse regions of Mexico. With the great support of @tomfoulsh.bsky.social

We did this in a very sophisticated way....by making the actors wear sunglasses! Green dots show how observers follow the speaker.
New paper which took a long time to come out, based on PhD students' Jessica Dawson and @apmartinezcedillo.bsky.social. We investigate the influence of signals from the eyes, and clinically-relevant traits, on how people follow a conversation.

Text says: This section provides a comprehensive description of the methodology employed in this study to develop an explainable XAI framework for ASD diagnosis and parental support. The proposed framework integrates the TabPFNMix regressor, a state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) model for tabular data, with SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) to ensure both high predictive accuracy and interpretability. The methodology is structured into five subsections: (1) Dataset Description, (2) TabPFNMix Overview, (3) SHAP for Explainability, (4) Framework Design, and (5) Evaluation Metrics. Figure 1 shows the overall methodology. Informed consent was obtained from all participants involved in the study, and, where applicable, consent was obtained from legal guardians for minor participants as approved by the IRB. And then Figure 1 is shown with lots of AI errors on the image.
An absolutely totally fine this can be published in a science journal image that purports to show how the study was carried out but instead is just AI slop.
Uhh,,, Figure 1 shows you... what exactly? Trying to understand Medical fryrmbial, runctitional features and mum's legs going through concrete.
This whole article is a bit of a disaster. And it's very difficult to find other published work for the author. Strange! π§ͺ

I don't think it is OK to desk reject a paper with no comments or feedback at all. If you have time to read/skim the paper and make a judgement, then you have time to write a sentence explaining why you don't want it (and that stuff is invaluable for ECRs)
Great postdoc opening in an amazing project!
The International Cognitive Load Theory Conference 2026 dates are now published!
Deadline to submit is 15th December.
See you all in Birmingham next year!

Absurd thing number 2: One of the reviewers, who I frankly suspect wrote their initial review using AI, insisted that our paper (a narrative review) required a method section. I'm all for rigour in reviews, but I've never read a review paper with a method section!
This drawn-out and discouraging experience has shown me exactly what poor editorial practice feels like.
We withdrew a manuscript from review at a journal today. I think that is the first time I've done that, but the review process was hugely delayed and unhelpful.
Some exciting news to share: Iβm joining Edge Hill University as a Lecturer in Psychology this September!
Excited (and a little nervous) for this next chapter in academia. I canβt wait to get started!

A little pre-print for your Monday morning #visionscience: www.researchsquare.com/article/rs-6.... This was a fun, if slightly wacky project... would love to hear any thoughts/critiques!! @riadsala.bsky.social
Fascinating study! Infants showed similar gaze patterns to AI- and non-AI-generated videos ππ€ β a smart use of AI to create controlled, naturalistic stimuli.
Here's a short thread about our paper in @cp-trendscognsci.bsky.social dlvr.it/TKxcFg ... 1/4
π¨ Big moment! After years of hard work - from designing the experiment to finalising the paper - it's finally out! Thrilled to share how well our model performs. Grateful for the journey and the results. πππ‘
