Broke out my Cognisys Sabre for the first time in a while and got this fun shot of a house finch coming in to perch!

It was so cool to see all her fat nodules too - gonna have some big eggs in there soon!
We totally need to chase them! Also @jencross.bsky.social how did I totally miss you at BugShot?!? I didn't even know you were there! I'm bummed because you're one of my favorite photographers I follow here! And a rare bugshotter that shoots other wildlife! Next time we'll have to shoot together!
Jeff Lockwood's excellent book Locust talks a fair bit about pioneering entomologists like C. V. Riley and the establishment of pest management programs (and the appropriation of funding) within the US Dept. of Agriculture, etc. Has some actual breakdowns of funding numbers.
Yyyeeeesssss
Happy mother's day!
This is STUNNING Marshal!
two orange ants with large dark oblong compound eyes face-to-face, touching antennae, small pack of green & orange aphids in distant (blurry) background
one of the more satisfying macro photographs that I've taken in awhile ...
Apache twig ants interacting while tending aphids, taken yesterday on the SDSU campus. one of my current ENT students pointed these out to me :)

This is SO good Gil!
Do you and @mhedin.bsky.social follow each other?
These are awesome shots Robby! And a freaking awesome spider. I love paradise spiders!
Got lucky to find a few of these stunning Mourning cloaks in San Diego a few weeks ago. One of them cooperated for a nice portrait.
Thank you!
I've wanted a print of this incredible piece by Joe Furman for years and finally went ahead and ordered one off of his Fine Art America site to hang in my office. I love it SO much!
This is the way.

Great Pogo shot! Really nice look at the psammaphore.
Honored to have my firefly footage and photographs included in this True Facts episode highlighting the critical importance of firefly conservation. Thanks @zefrank.bsky.social for including me (and thanks to @alexwild.bsky.social for recommending my work!). This is a must-watch! ✨
The front of the lens was nearly at the minimum focus distance here - probably less than 2 inches! I only got bit once :)
Got lucky with this awesome shot of a Southern Alligator Lizard (Elgaria multicarinata) two nights ago. I coaxed him a little into this defensive posture but he put on quite the show. I love these awesome lizards!
Didn't have a flight set up then though. We look to have a few wild species here in so cal and I can ask some UCR ent folks if anyone has a colony. John Abbott might well have Gryllus in flight though! Or if you're up for mailing me some live ones?!
Ooooh cool!! Okay, I can try to work on that! I regularly purchase Acheta but have never tried getting those in flight (not sure how readily they fly anyway - especially reared ones). We had lots of mass emergences of G. texensis when I was in Austin and they flew a bit more readily...
This is awesome! Are you selling these or selling the plans?
Better late than never! Here's a link to a calendar of my in-flight images. Full disclosure, this is the first time I'm using Printify. No idea about the print quality or costs, etc. If anyone orders one, let me know how it turns out and I can plan to do one for 2026!

Love this Abbey! If I were going to Portland I would have loved to be a part of this (severe OCD and Tourette's) and would be happy to discuss mental health as well - maybe in a break out session or sip and share type of thing. Maybe at one of the future meetings?
One of my former students. I’m so proud, and so angry.
Finally got my hands on this masterpiece!
Stunning!! Love this!
Outstanding shot Gil!
