When people ask, "Right before the Republic crumbled, who was doing the best 19th century literary pun stencils?" remember my name.

Here’s an essay I wrote about trees. It’s also about climate narratives, loss, and Dutch women in early twentieth-century botany. But mostly it’s about 🌳🌳🌳 (and πŸͺ²πŸͺ²πŸͺ²). With illustrations from @naturalis.bsky.social

One of my favourite things in headlines are where you can see the muscle memory of legal training being applied to animals, buildings, train lines.

View of bare winter trees from below. Dark, spindly silhouettes against a mottled blue-grey sky, a clearing in the middle. And at the edges, four dark smudges of birds’ nests. (I should rewrite my alt texts as haikus, I’m thinking now.)

Haha, must be the legs. A famous Dutch bird guide from 1912 suggests that once you're in the hide, the birds will settle faster if you go in there with some friends, and then ask one of them lto eave. Then the birds think the coast is clear! But the book warns that crows can count to 4. ❀️

Black-and-white photograph of someone walking along a beach with lots of birds flying up above. Of the person you can only see who legs, peeking out from under a cube with small windows cut out of it, which have the effect of making a smiley face. I get a smiley face looking at this image.

I will never tired of photographs of people walking around carrying bird hides on their head. From the book, In de ban van vogels (a history of Dutch ornithology), by Karel Voous.

Lock of hair belonging to William IV, Prince of Orange (1711-1751), currently on show at the Mauritshuis as part of their 'Lost Museum' exhibit. Arresting to encounter- it stopped me in my tracks!
