When I told both of my daughters that I had been diagnosed with Autism, both of them said, "Yeah, we know."

Thinking about it makes me laugh. Apparently, they thought I was autistic for years but didn’t want to say something in case it might upset me. 😂

But I think I did OK. Both of my girls are autistic, and I just seem to naturally vibe with them. Their doctors for years thought I was on the spectrum as well. I just brushed it off, thinking that I was just odd and had issues because I had an abusive upbringing. That certainly wasn’t the case.

Originally never wanted kids, but life happens.

I can tell you I initially felt some disconnect when they presented me with this small wrinkled thing in a blanket. The idea of being a parent was foreign to me. I certainly didn’t have a great role models in my own parents...

Despite all this, I articulate well, except when my dysphonetic dyslexia gets in the way. I was a straight A student in school.

I would’ve never fit the criteria of the DSM back in the 70s and 80s. Nevertheless, the signs were always there.

And I still check the room to see if I’m having an appropriate response to things. Laughing is one. If I see something funny on TV that makes me laugh, I still double check those around me to make sure they’re laughing, too.

I've struggled for years to fit in. I have to mask constantly to pretend I’m normal, and it is exhausting. I have meltdowns when I'm overwhelmed or overstimulated. I hate making eye contact. I have to constantly monitor how I say things...

i’m glad the article states the facts. I’m late diagnosed. Not only that, I have the key genetic mutations seen in those with autism. Both of my children are autistic, and I 100% guarantee that my father is, too; although, he’ll never get tested.
