All major models are signalling a very active tropical Australia over the next week and a half. TLs in GoC, Timor sea, and Coral sea. Still a long way out but the consistancy between the models indicates it is worth watching.ποΈπ #Cyclone #Tropics

Holiday today + sore from snowboarding so I did a bit more of this. Wrote a simple TC center calculation code for IR data. Also migrated the plotting scheme over to Python based so it looks way nicer. Video shows brightness temp shaded every 5C and contoured every 10C. Plus marker = computed center.

A lovely "landcane" over central australia right now! Quite rare, it is dumping tons of rain over normally parched deserts.

Photo of a big new moon on the top-left of frame, shot at 500mm, with a red dot in the center of frame (Mercury) and the Griffith Observatory on the bottom-right corner.
Moon and Mercury setting next to the Griffith Observatory just moments ago. Found a good spot to take photos.

Yes there are cases it is out of the way. Goes18 inclination is close enough to 0Β° (I.e. above equator) but earths axis is tilted by 23.5Β°, pulls moon and earths orbits are non zero incl

I love this demonstration of distance! GOES18 is in geostationary orbit 35,800 km from earth which is 9.3% further from the moon than the earths surface.
Hence the apparent size difference and annular nature of the eclipse from there
Demonstrates the extraordinary coincidence we see from earth! π

Geostationary orbit is 35,800 km - distance earth to moon is 384,000 km so GOES 18 is 9.3% further⦠hence the size difference!

Eastward upper outflow For STC #Mitchell looks restricted on the IR satellite loop which is likely hampering development with increasing shear also evident.
I think it has peaked and is unlikely to further intensify.

Admittedly this is resonably old (5:40am AWST 7th Feb) but it is the latest MW image with decent coverage, and it looks more impressive than I thought with really strong convection in the NE quad #CycloneMitchell.
It has definitely improved since then so Im looking forward to another good sat pass.

Tropical Cyclone Mitchell (#21U / 20S) is a pretty large system and is currently at 982hPa Cat 2 (Aus scale) with sustained winds around the 50 kt (92km/h) mark.
With warm seas, low-mod shear tons of moisture and good outflow, it is expected to strengthen today to cat 3 with winds to 80 kt.
