The Supreme Court just ruled that these tariffs were basically taxes. Taxes are the role of Congress, not the President. So all of these tariffs were illegal. And they have already been charged to US consumers for about a year to the sum of about $1000 per person, on average.
Meanwhile, many of the US products are made with components not made in the US. That means that the US was still buying foreign products, but selling way fewer items out of the country. That is the widening trade gap.
Trump instituted all of these tariffs over the last year. This caused everyone in the US to pay more, as the cost of the tariff was passed on to the customer. It also made foreign buyers of US products to stop buying them.
