Only Howard Jacobson could find comedy in the horrors of October 7 Howl is an angry and surprisingly funny novel β€” it is his best since The Finkler Question

Let me get this straight: Howard Jacobson has written a novel about Israel, October 7 and Gaza protests - topics on which some may say we've heard enough from him - and it's pizzazzy, funny, and his best novel in probably 25 years?

Me on Howl, and how you needn't agree with a book to like it:

A quote from TS Eliot against a light teal background. The text reads: 'Whether one is a prolific writer or not, the question whether one is a writer at all is one which constantly asks itself and I think ought to go on asking itself ... At any rate I have never got rid of it myself and it attacks me from time to time most unexpectedly.'. – TS Eliot, letter to Henry Treece, 9 Sept 1943' northseapoets.com. I have seen a lot of cursed stuff in my time in academia but this is among the *most* cursed.
Grammarly is generating miniature LLMs based on academic work so that users can have their writing β€˜reviewed’ by experts like David Abulafia, who died less than two months ago.

2 images wide by side repeated 3 times, zooming in further on the faces each time.
On the left, a woman holds her hand in the air to attract attention while kneeling next to a man who has fallen down clutching his chest,
on the right, a serious-faced man holding a briefcase

Woman: Y a t'il un docteur ici?.
Man: Je suis docteur. Que se passe t'il?
Woman: Une attaque cardiaque !
Man: Je suis docteur en philosophie !
Woman: Il va mourir...
Man: Nous allons tous mourir.

Translation in English:
Woman: Is there a doctor here?
Man: I am a doctor, what happened to him?
Woman: - a heart attack
Man: I am a doctor of philosophy
Woman: He's going to die...
Man: We're all going to die
