I was part of the majority in 2022 that upheld the lower courtβs order requiring the state to meet this obligation. But now, these funds are in limbo and there has been no ruling in the case.

Currently, nearly half of North Carolina counties are classified as βlegal deserts,β meaning there is less than one attorney per one thousand residents. This leaves many working families, rural communities, and people in low-income areas with limited or no access to legal services.

A huge thank you to everyone who has sent notes of goodwill, support, or prayer over the past week since I shared my breast cancer diagnosis. It has meant more to me than I can say.
Thank you all for reaffirming that we stand together to protect our rights and freedoms.
