North Carolina: today is primary election day! Polls are open through 7:30 pm across the state.
This anniversary is a reminder that the work of the judiciary and courts matters. Courts exist to interpret and apply the Constitution, and their decisions have real consequences for students, teachers, and communities across North Carolina.
I was part of the majority in 2022 that upheld the lower court’s order requiring the state to meet this obligation. But now, these funds are in limbo and there has been no ruling in the case.
Today marks two years since the North Carolina Supreme Court reheard arguments in the Leandro case, nearly 30 years after five counties first went to court seeking the constitutional promise of a “sound, basic education” for their children.
Last week I joined elected officials and community members from across the region at Rep. Liu’s Lunar New Year Gala to discuss the importance of civic engagement and voting. The room was full of individuals who are fired up to participate in the 2026 elections!
Today is the first day of the Lunar New Year. 2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse, which brings vibrant and fiery energy, adventure, speed, momentum, and potential.
No appointments to the Commission have been made yet.
Currently, nearly half of North Carolina counties are classified as “legal deserts,” meaning there is less than one attorney per one thousand residents. This leaves many working families, rural communities, and people in low-income areas with limited or no access to legal services.
Today, the NC Supreme Court authorized the creation of a Commission on Practice Innovation, which will study options to expand access to legal services across the state.
As an attorney and as your Justice, I have sought to ensure that all people are treated equally under the law, including protecting worker’s rights. I’m looking forward to working with the NC State AFL-CIO to guarantee that our Courts continue to protect our rights.

I met teachers unable to offer their students the resources they need to learn and citizens afraid to leave their homes because federal agents were targeting their communities. It has been a difficult year for many of our neighbors.
I met people who were struggling to care for elderly parents, families who lost their homes to foreclosure after being misled by their mortgage lenders, voters whose ballots were unfairly challenged in the 2024 election.
Among the things I heard: people care about funding public education, protecting the right to vote, addressing gun violence, and a justice system that treats everyone equally and upholds their rights.
I visited communities far and wide – from churches, to schools, to precinct meetings – I showed up. And I listened.
I was honored to have strong early support from Governor Roy Cooper, EMILYs List, the NC State AFL-CIO, the North Carolina Association of Educators, and elected officials and community leaders across the state.
We officially launched this campaign in April at the Hayti Heritage Center, a longtime driving force of justice and freedom for all since its inception – a perfect venue to kick off a campaign focused on the rights and freedoms of ALL North Carolinians.
This year was one for the books! So far this campaign has taken me to 40 counties and well over 100 events across our great state – from kitchen table conversations to packed listening sessions, from rural towns to city streets.
This is me and my brother, Aaron, in 1963. While I no longer make trips downtown to see Santa Claus, Christmas still brings me awe and wonder. May your day be filled with peace and joy, and may you be surrounded by loved ones this holiday season.
Happy Holidays from me and Charles! I hope this holiday season brings you joy and peace. Whatever our beliefs, whatever our circumstances, we all can take time to extend the small kindnesses that recognize our common humanity. That’s what the spirit of the season means to me.
The year is coming to a close, but this campaign is just ramping up. I’m excited to continue meeting North Carolinians where they are and hearing about their concerns.
Within a week we traveled all across the state. From Camden County to Hendersonville with a few stops in between, we discussed the importance of a Supreme Court that protects the rights and freedoms of all North Carolinians.
A uniform system of public education, which is promised in our North Carolina Constitution, opens doors for students of all backgrounds. It is critical that the Court continue to fulfill its fundamental role of upholding the Constitution and the rights it guarantees.
I am grateful to the North Carolina Association of Educators for endorsing me for re-election. Public school teachers and administrators are doing a tremendous job under very challenging circumstances, and they often don't get the recognition or appreciation they deserve.

Today, I officially filed for re-election to the Supreme Court!
Upholding my oath of office to rule without fear or favor has been my guiding light every day on the Court. I am grateful for the opportunity to ask the people of North Carolina to elect me to a second term.
Your trust in me and in our shared values carries meaning beyond the ballot. It represents hope that our courts will continue to serve the people and ensure justice remains accessible and reliable.
