π¨π¨π¨ NetSci Hackathon PSA!!!
Are you at NetSci this year? Wanna come a day early and hack on a cool new dataset? Join our hackathon which will take place on May 31.
We have limited space, so please indicate your interest through our application form by Mar 13: www.philchodrow.prof/higher-order...
New on the arxiv:
βGraphs are maximally expressive for higher-order interactionsβ
arxiv.org/abs/2602.16937
We clarify central misconceptions in the recent literature on "higher-order networks".

Explainer π§΅: 1/N
Interested in giving a talk at @netsciconf.bsky.social but missed the main conference deadline? Submit your work to the Statistical Inference for Network Models (SINM) satellite! Send your one page abstract by March 15 and check out sinm.network for more details!
How complex should network models be?
π¨ In our latest paper we quantify (if and) when higher-order interactions are informative versus reducible to pairwise structure without losing functional signal (e.g., diffusion behavior).

I believe science is much more like art than many scientists are willing to consider. I have a feeling that it would free us to do better science if we embraced this view. I may be mistaken but that's where I am mentally.

Excited to see this out! If you need to identify a network backbone but donβt know how to choose the number of edges to keep, hereβs a Bayesian solution.

a thing Iβve noticed in my time in research: many people really want to believe that Dataβ’ is some sort of magical object that contains objective truth
but the thing is, just like everything else, data is _produced_ via processes and mechanisms that profoundly affect the shape of the data

Journal of Physics: Complexity is an emerging interdisciplinary journal focusing on all areas of complex systems and networks, run by the excellent @gin-bianconi.bsky.social and an editorial board of top researchers across different subfields.
I've been guest editing a focus issue for Journal of Physics: Complexity with @jgyou.bsky.social, @gcant.bsky.social, and Cate De Bacco on Statistical Inference and Machine Learning for Complex Networks. See iopscience.iop.org/collections/..., and feel free to get in touch with any questions!
Finished reviewing my pile of papers for a premier data mining CS conference today and then read their other reviews. Wow. They are utter garbage: largely superficial, thoughtless, and vague. We should be ashamed to call this #peerreview and inflict this misery on each other and on our trainees 1/2
π Congrats to Federico Battiston!
Federico, Associate Professor at CEU DNDS & Director of the PhD Program, has won the 2025 Young Scientist Award in Socio- & Econophysics from the German Physical Society! π
