βSex Edβ is an umbrella term that, for elementary school, includes puberty, boundaries, communication, abuse prevention, hygiene and anti-bullying. Every age has age-appropriate topics that make kids safer - including media literacy and online safety.
SURPRISE: PARENTS SQUAWKING ABOUT HOW NEED TO TALK ABOUT SEX ED AT HOME - ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT IT AT HOME - TOO BUSY YELLING AT SCHOOL COMMITTEE
i have had beef with the state of virginia since the sixth grade when it tricked me into attending sex ed by calling it βfamily life educationβ
This idea that life would be easier for people if we just shut kids out of every social outlet is incredibly bigoted. There's a lot of "It's the parents job to do xyz" with no resources for parents and no acknowledgement that some parents are abusive and that the Internet is all these kids have

Know how to make kids safer online? By teaching them not to have DMs open to strangers. Give them proper sex ed so they know if theyre being groomed.
But no lets do anything but that!!
note: making condom balloons is harder than you think. You have to make a fist around the condom with the end open on one side, which you are going to blow INTO like a trumpet. Practice at home. This skill will serve you well, padawan
Why hide lgbtqia+ topics from children? I got friends who have kids with two dads. My kids will have two trans-nonbinary parents.
Fundamentally, those gripes are from people who use their own interpretation of their own beliefs to police and ostracize the world around them. Why's that my problem?
Like, it would be one thing if it were some fucked up private Catholic school or something, but why should public school curriculum exclude queer folk just existing?
Like, if I had a child, I want them to know about the world around them! How diverse and complex we are.
"Kids and adults shouldn't have to get all their sex ed from the Internet"
and
"I'm so glad there's online resources available to teach kids and adults sex ed"
are two sentiments that can and must coexist btw
Were you guys actually given sex talks growing up?? I was handed a pad and tampon at 11 and told to figure it out and at 15 my sister drew me a diagram lmao at that point I was heavy into fan fiction though so likeβ¦ I knew π
Sex Ed today at Chez Robichaud.
Kiddo: does period blood come out of the pee hole?
D: nope, it comes out of the baby hole.
Kiddo: do boys get periods?
D: no, boys donβt have periods. Or a baby hole. Just pee hole and poop hole. Boysβ plumbing is weird.
Me: β¦ yup, sounds right
Screenshot of Psychology Today's article with a headline that reads, "How to improve sex education, a new report spells out the evidence on teaching youth about sex." The first paragraph in the article is featured too, and reads, "on the whole, public schools in the US are doing a poor job of teaching sex education to American youth." Below is a stock photo of a chalkboard, books and a red apple.
A new report from the @ameracadpeds.bsky.social provides suggestions to improve our current failing sex ed system. In summary, young people need to hear from responsible adults in their lives about all aspects of sexuality. #SexED bit.ly/3ZioWXL @psychologytoday.com
"The Epstein Class" is one hell of an attack, especially when you consider that MAGA is pro-pedophile.
One only needs to look at how they criticized sex ed in schools. If you think that young people shouldn't be taught how to recognize abuse, you're on the side of the abuser.
Omg, I help teach Sex Ed to middle schoolers and literally they do not give a shit. They're too busy joking with each other!
Five jobs Iβve had:

Why name it though? Derek is a name that a student might have so, no.
I teach my students how to make balloons out of condoms - which usually wind up as condom balloon volleyball. Silly? Of course. But the education is in de-sexualizing them so students can practice handling them voluntarily.
Note: check for latex allergies before attempting.
This is a terrible trend in sex ed. Do not put condoms on bananas or cucumbers. Do not sexualize food. Pity the child who has a banana for lunch that day. Or who wishes they did, while you are throwing that one away.

Meanwhile, Iowa Republicans removed HPV and the HPV vaccine from the mandatory sex ed curriculum in 2023. So in many Iowa schools, pre-teens and teenagers are no longer learning that there's a vaccine that could prevent many types of cancer.

A reminder that I'm raising $4k to support @scarleteen.com's staff and volunteer health fund to ensure that sex educators doing some of the BEST sex ed around are able to access health care. In an era of misinfo where most kids don't even get the most basic in school, Scarleteen is critical.
For an example: in many kids who are experiencing sexual abuse by a parent, family member, neighbor, teacher, religious leader, etc, the abuse started before they understood what sex *was*, and is tied up in a messy set of feelings conflating their feelings about the abuse and love for the abuser.
