Fritz was one of the lucky ones. Over 8 million horses lost their lives serving during the First World War, either due to wounds, disease, starvation or exposure.
[3/3]
Fritz survived and went on to be the 5th Dragoon Guards mascot, travelling to Egypt, Palestine and India, before retiring to Colchester, England.
[2/3]
Fritz was a German machine gun pulling horse, captured by the 5th Dragoon Guards at Harbonnieres, 8th August 1918. He was used as a cavalry horse for the rest of the war, and received a gunshot wound to the neck. [1/3]
