A digital painting and work-in-progress of a painting I started at the end of last year. We see a star-filled sky at twilight, with a fiery-red light coming from the bottom of the frame where the top half of a fiery individual stands holding a sword to the sky, where a teal green comet falls down towards the point of the sword. The person's rib cage is visible, as a brilliant light is coming from inside their chest which has ignited their skin, bursting forth from their skin, eyes and mouth as they reach upward into the sky.

I go to a small state school, so the mathematics department is small and some of the admin are trying to get rid of pure math, hence some of my sensitivity. My undergraduate advisor made it sound like they didn’t have phds in pure mathematics, which is false

There are very few people I get to talk to about what I do and I have to constantly listen to how important this other world is. Mine barely exists irl. I made this post because I wanted to appreciate my wizard math. I’m sorry I didn’t pay enough respect to the applied stuff

It’s not that it’s bad it’s just I wasn’t expecting it, I barely remember making this post. But I made this post because I’m surrounded by lots of people at school who do applied math. There is a little pocket in my classes but almost everyone else is doing something applied.

The fact that mine is so abstract allows my imagination to really play in a way that thinking about physics does not. This is local to me. I like having a big open world. Even if it’s easy. Even if it’s a distraction. It’s what I like.

Ok, but newton et al were also doing non applied stuff. As were the Greeks. Anyway I like pure math, maybe it’s easy for you all, but I like it. It delights my synesthesia. You mentioned Noether, she did a lot in my world too. That’s what I like to think about, sorry it’s not your not math.

Where do you think many of the ideas of applied mathematics came from? Perhaps originally they were once pure mathematics and it was eventually realized they could be useful for modeling something. There are many such cases of this

The new that I’m saying which is localized to me is that I want to see new patterns. sometimes that does come out physics or applied stuff, at this moment I seem to be maximizing my access by focusing on pure mathematics. This is not a value judgement, this month old post is about what I like

I hear what you’re saying but it’s actually not that interesting to *me* whether or not a pattern is applicable to modeling something, I’m in for the patterns. I don’t crave seeing models of reality, I instead crave meeting new to me patterns. This is more the domain of pure mathematics

Sometimes I’m not very patient with people, I suppose but I also found a way to bike in the winter in a small town in Maine with absolutely no fucking bike infrastructure at all, so I’m just built different (had no other option, had to get to work)
