I take care of children who DIE of conditions that we canβt prevent and that despite our very best efforts we cannot cure.
The fact that CHILDREN DIE of diseases that can be completely eradicated with safe and effective vaccines makes me LIVID.
Proud to work for the @jama.com Network.

Has anyone received an NIH LRP award payment disbursed since Jan 20th?

So grateful to be selected for this awesome new national K-12!
This is what amounts to an ILLEGAL & indiscriminate funding cut for research centers everywhere. It will mean shuttering labs across the country, layoffs in red & blue states, and derailing lifesaving research on everything from cancer to opioid addiction.
We all need to speak out to save lives.
They are coming after scientists. Everyone should care about this. The next cure or lifesaving device may not get discovered.

I ran @USAID health programs for the last 3 years. Trumpβs 90 day Stop Work Order on foreign assistance does serious damage to the world and the US. Examples:π§΅
Government is like we all chip in and help each with things like food safety or health insurance and sometimes the person weβre helping is you or your dad or sister or kid when they have cancer
An explainer about how health research funding happens and why this NIH funding cycle shutdown matters: www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnb...
I hope University Presidents who like to cozy up to their stateβs GOP electeds are on the phone this morning fighting for science.
And I hope they learn a lesson or two about using their power for good in the future.

All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.
NIH appears to have canceled/postponed all of its study sectionsβthe independent review panels that approve federal grants for health research.
Such grants fund the work/salaries of 300k people at more than 2,500 institutions
This is depressing and terrifying.
Trump administrationβs abrupt cancellation of scientific meetings prompts confusion, concern www.statnews.com/2025/01/22/t... via @statnews.com

No, I say, no more than I can recommend a good physicist who does not believe in gravity.'

I know itβs obvious, but I think itβs still worth saying out loud:
Someone who wants to end fact checking wants to be able to lie to you without detection.
When lies are undetected, they start to shape our reality. Weβre a lot more vulnerable when we canβt tell that a lie is a lie.
My friends in the Dementia world. Please read this and consider what the effects on healthcare for people with Alzheimerβs disease in England would have been if NICE had approved lecanemab and donanemab for NHS use. And, of course, they donβt have clinical efficacy, anyway!
I will never stop being aghast that the United States built a higher education system that was literally the envy of the entire worldβour bitterest political enemies nonetheless sent their children to us to be educated, it was so goodβ& then just decided to systematically, ruthlessly dismantle it
Today seems like a good day to share this Scientific American story on how vaccines have saved more lives throughout history than any other intervention
Since everyoneβs finding old and new friends, take a moment to read my story, Iβm a 32yo polio survivor because I was not vaccinated. Pass on my story, repeat it, tell it to any vaccine hesitate parent. No kid deserves vaccine preventable diseases

THREAD: Research we should be thankful for.
The chances that we and everyone we know and love would be here today, alive, healthy and thriving without the advances of science and technology are basically zero.
Today we look through the research and scientists to whom we owe everything.
