HOPE IS A DECISION

Margaret Mitchell, who was famously fired from Google after co-authoring the seminal "Stochastic Parrots" paper, has been posting on X lately because she is caught up in mass blocklists of AI industry people on Bluesky, making the platform borderline unusable for her.

Here she's on X quote-tweeting fellow AI ethics researcher Giada Pistilli, who is in the same boat.

Pistilli said: I really wanted πŸ¦‹ to work, but it looks like I’m on the worst block lists out there. Oh, well.

Mitchell said: I think what many πŸ¦‹ Bsky users may be overlooking is that they’re blocking people in positions of influence *who want to listen to them*. As someone influentialish in AI ethics, it’s important for me to know what creators, critics, Luddites, etc., are thinking and seeing.

Mitchell added in a second post: I’m an advocate in tech directly aligned with a lot of their values in the very spaces where decisions that affect them are being made. I need the stats, articles, hot takes…all the deets they can give me so I can be prepared when talking to regulators, academics, techies, etc

Blocking hatemongers is one thing but this trend of using mass block lists to avoid hearing from people who might or might not hold points of view you expect to disagree with is unhealthy imo and hurts the platform.

Bluesky was better off with folks like Margaret Mitchell and Giada Pistilli on it.

my unpopular opinion is that Mario is what it is because of console exclusivity. Mario is the face of the brand -> we have to make sure Mario games are good -> good Mario game sells consoles -> Mario is the face of the brand etc

isn’t Nintendo proof that console exclusives work?

If you don’t want to wait for the fish one (lol) Wyrmspan is already an improvement and it has dragons which is fun

Wingspan is really fun, it’s really popular also so there are younger kid-friendly rule variants out there if you want. Codenames is a great cooperative game but needs at least 4 players.

hello cis friends
this is what people mean by trans genocide

if a type of person does not officially exist, then any harm against them cannot be measured or reported

this headline change isn't even being caused by an executive order

it's simply the NYT editors deciding we don't deserve to exist

Why am I making this point? Because as usual, the discussion over "letting people live in high fire risk areas" has begun. It's my job to point out that people have lived here for millennia, and because they knew the fire risk, they managed the fuel. Limited fuel = limited fire.

The question about keeping one human role and replacing the rest with Muppets in a movie to make it better - i mean the answer is obviously Daniel Craig in the Knives Out movies, right

University of California: In Memoriam, July 1975

I love re-upping this: for decades the main library at UCLA had the generic name University Research Library because the person most responsible for getting it built was an English professor named Hugh G. Dick and the university refused to name it after him.
