The C.FL monastery I visited today had a small citrus grove, mostly frozen to a crisp. Was really something to see. They had pruned some closer to the dining hall with less damage but you could see how whole fields would've been wiped out. Plus it's been so dry a few wildfires have been breaking out
Altar inside meditation hall for Thich Nhat Hahn with purple orchids, oranges, lamps and a photo of Thay.
Red framed gate to Tu Vien Thanh A Monastery in Sorrento, FL. On the top of the gate, Unified Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam flags fly on each side of a bright yellow dharma wheel
Red lanterns hangs in clusters over a brick path.
Meditation hall altar of white stone Buddha framed by purple orchids and pyramids of pomelos with scattered black mats and cushions on the wood floor.
Attended a โDay of Mindfulnessโ at a monastery in the Plum Village tradition (Thich Nhat Hahnโs) in Sorrento, FL. 4 monastics from Blue Cliff Monastery, NY were making a visit. At least 80-90 people there, many central FL 1st &2nd gen Vietnamese immigrant families w/ about ~15 of us mixed Am. guests
I am sorry to report it is March 1st and the โbuy our productโ to support International Womenโs Day emails have started.

Oh my. Anticipating the British foods-Italian foods discourse convergence.
(That said, will admit there have been a couple โapple pieโ โpizzasโ Iโve mostly enjoyed.)

What's hockey for catenaccio
A conversation with a dept. chair during last year's NWSA keeps returning to me... the echoing quote being, "what are we trying to save?"

Guess it was good I ended my weekly call with hockey(most sports)-loving parents to let them enjoy Q3 & OT. May be able to hear them up the I-4 corridor. Heartbreak for our Canadian friends who pushed the U.S. to the last.
In junior high, we had a summer program in Philosophy & Lit at a local college with a Prof. William Lohman... who assigned us, among other plays, Death of a Salesman.

The contrast in a generation - one vivid memory about reporting for freshman orientation at FSU was being put in a line to get (re)immunized bc they couldnโt interpret my records. Called family doctor in a panic & got it sorted but there was a block on my registration, housing, etc. until we did.
I love that they sent holiday cards! That is a wonderful idea :)
It is very sweet to see at my lunch spot today the local library has a booth set up with books wrapped as Valentines, encouraging people to sign up for a library card and check out a book ๐
Thought similar!
Yes - just got results back from this version myself. Awkward but a good step, especially for those of us for whom it's harder to find transportation support after anesthesia.
1) AmericaS, say the S.
2) Expecting a half dozen presentations on the amount of green/sugar cane/plantains, etc. in this show at upcoming NWSA which is themed "Wild"
On point! Time for super snacks. My next Publix run is timed for the Girl Scout cookie booth ๐
Perhaps a local cultural center or sangha would appreciate a donation?
Also Samantha Cristoforetti ๐ฎ๐น ๐ค
Have caught up with opening ceremonies in Milano Cortina & must say I appreciated how the dance segments in particular were choreographed mainly as they would be in a theater, well done with proper ballet & modern movements, the opening w/ Teatro alla Scalaโs academy of course & choreo w/ Ghali too.
...while also feeling they were genuinely working by looking up "answers," tutorials, etc. elsewhere (online). Unintended consequence (benefit of the doubt) of e-books & Ed Tech broadly, just too many options that drown the self <--> source connection. So we tried to talk about trusting our humanity
Had a great if hard chat with my intro ethics students today about reading. Really don't think there is an ability or motivation issue as much as has been made out in some places. Was surprised there was a kind of lack of trust in the self to work with material directly, to just read on their own...
Ugh. No ๐
๐จCalling all anthropologists who love sport, study sport, play sport, and/or write about sport. Itโs time for a topical interest group focused on sport to bring us together in conversation and collaboration. If youโre interested in forming a TIG, please let me know. It only takes 10 of us to start.
