Short graphical abstract summarizing key facts about Angomonas: its habitat in the digestive tract of insects; the cellular organization of the flagellate containing a single cytoplasmic endsymbiont with associated glycosomes; synchronized cell cycles of host and endosymbiont; the discovery of endosymbiont-targeted host proteins (ETPs) by mass spectrometry; differential subcellular localization of the ETPs; and the endosymbiont division machinery of dual genetic origin.
The symbiont-harboring trypanosomatid Angomonas deanei is Parasite of the Month. π

crTP X-ray structure
β¨X-ray crystallography reveals surprising twist in how proteins enter the unique photosynthetic organelles of Paulinella. The chromatophore targeting peptide (crTP) folds into a 3D structure, hinting that folded proteins cross peptidoglycan and inner membrane. (1/2)

In Angomonas, the host and endosymbiont divide in sync. We discovered that ETP2 helps recruit the dynamin-like protein ETP9 to the symbiont division site, revealing a new piece of the host-encoded machinery controlling endosymbiont division.

By sidestepping the complexities of polycistronic transcription (typical for trypanosomatids like Angomonas) Lenaβs new system lays the groundwork for a long-awaited conditional expression platform which will be a game changer for dissecting host-symbiont molecular interactions in real time.

A gatekeeper for gene transfers - Nature Plants
Large-scale genetic screening for plastid-to-nucleus gene transfers identifies that fast double-strand break repair functions as a key barrier for nuclear integration of organellar DNA and provides in...
With their clever setup to visualize ongoing endosymbiotic gene transfers (EGTs), Enrique Gonzalez-Duran, Ralph Bock and team reveal how double-strand break repair limits excessive EGT. Check out their new Nature Plants paper and my News and Views summary! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

The host-encoded dynamin-like protein ETP9 forms a contractile ring around the endosymbiont. ETP9 knock down results in division-impaired, filamentous endosymbionts before cells eventually die. 2/2

Angomonas deanei with flourescent-labeled nucleus and endosymbiont. ETP9 localizes at the endosymbiont division site.
Out today: Exciting intermediate between endosymbiont and organelle identified! Endosymbionts in Angomonas deanei lost nearly all bacterial cell division genes. Instead, we identified a host-encoded protein, ETP9, that became specialized for endosymbiont division. 1/2
