An announcement poster stating 'We have detected West Nile virus in mosquitoes collected in the UK for the first time', with a mosquito graphic.
π Today, UKHSA and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) have confirmed the first detection of West Nile virus in mosquitoes collected in the UK.
There is currently no evidence of wider circulation in birds or mosquitoes, and the risk to the public remains very low.

Join us today at ESCMID Global to hear more about #vaccine innovation against antimicrobial resistance #AMR
β‘οΈ At 11:00 in Hall 12 - Evidence, gaps, & opportunities to maximise the impact of vaccines against AMR
β‘οΈ At 14:45 in Arena 4 - Meet the innovators developing next generation bacterial vaccines
One hurdle being that #vaccines are underfunded and their value is underestimated. He noted that data sharing is the first step to data integration, and concluded by saying that the first challenge of AMR is the resistance of humans to change @escmid.bsky.social
Itβs always a pleasure to hear Javier Yuguerros-Marcos from WOAH share learnings from animal health where #AMR action is focused on prevention through animal welfare, biosecurity (in human health: infection prevention and control), & vaccination -
Finally, Tochi Okwor from the Nigeria Center for Disease Control and Prevention highlighted that from a practical perspective and based on existing evidence, #vaccination is a simple intervention leveraging existing resources.
Chantal Morel from the KPM Center for Health management reminded all that collecting data requires well functioning health systems and Joseph Lewnard remarked that hospital-based sentinels systems and microbiology labs would support appropriate attribution of AMR-related deaths.
During the panel discussion on turning commitments into action following the UNGA political declaration on #AMR, Yvan Huron from WHO recommends starting with core indicators on prevention: WASH, immunisation, & antibiotic use, in addition to antimicrobial resistance data @escmid.bsky.social
He added that beyond bacterial pathogens, viral infections such as influenza, rotavirus or RSV are responsible for a significant proportion of antibiotic use - by preventing disease, #vaccines can reduce the need for treatment and the risk of secondary infections, relieving selective pressure.
Live from #ESCMIDGlobal: Prof Lewnard presented modelling work (The Lancet, 2024) estimating that expanding paediatric #immunisation in LMICs could prevent 181β,500 #AMR associated deaths, from both direct prevention of resistant infections and reductions in antibiotic use.
@escmid.bsky.social
Vaccines like PCV (Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine) & Rotarix have played a significant role in mitigating Antimicrobial Resistance. By preventing infections, these vaccines reduce the need for antibiotics, thereby slowing the development of resistant bacteria.

π€ Today Iβm at the NextGen Biomed conference in London where I will speak about the current vaccine pipeline from Vaccines Europe members & what this tells us about future trends for infectious disease vaccines & mAbs. If you're attending, please come say hi!
π€ What evidence is there of the impact of immunisation against #AMR? In today's video, Charlie Weller of @wellcometrust.bsky.social provides a few examples:
In the second video of our #VaccineVoices series on #AMR, Charlie Weller from @wellcometrust.bsky.social explains how vaccines target the root causes of AMR and the need to use all the tools in our toolbox to combat this global threat.
π EMA celebrates its 3οΈβ£0οΈβ£th anniversary highlighting its evolving role at the centre of the EU assessing & authorising safe, high-quality medicines for 450 million people & countless animals in Europe.

Estimates suggest bacterial antimicrobial resistance #AMR will cause 3 deaths every minute between 2025 and 2050.
In the new episode of our #VaccineVoices series, @Charlie Weller from @wellcometrust.bsky.social discusses why AMR is a significant threat to public health.
The World Economic Forumβs 2025 Annual Meeting in Davos emphasized the urgency of addressing AMR through multisectoral action, aligning political commitments from the UNGA, G7, and G20 with the private sector to drive innovation and strengthen global resilience against drug-resistant infections.
Hey, nice to meet you!

WHO comments on United States announcement of intent to withdraw The World Health Organization regrets the announcement that the United States of America intends to withdraw from the Organization. WHO plays a crucial role in protecting the health and security of the worldβs people, including Americans, by addressing the root causes of disease, building stronger health systems, and detecting, preventing and responding to health emergencies, including disease outbreaks, often in dangerous places where others cannot go. The United States was a founding member of WHO in 1948 and has participated in shaping and governing WHOβs work ever since, alongside 193 other Member States, including through its active participation in the World Health Assembly and Executive Board. For over seven decades, WHO and the USA have saved countless lives and protected Americans and all people from health threats. Together, we ended smallpox, and together we have brought polio to the brink of eradication. American institutions have contributed to and benefited from membership in WHO. With the participation of the United States and other Member States, WHO has over the past 7 years implemented the largest set of reforms in its history, to transform our accountability, cost-effectiveness, and impact in countries. This work continues. We hope the United States will reconsider and we look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership between the USA and WHO, for the benefit of the health and well-being of millions of people around the globe.
