And I do think the gaming public at large realised that, even if they were too media illiterate to really articulate it and so just fell back on it "being woke" somehow. It wasn't woke, it wasn't *anything*, it was a Silicon Valley product trying to "disrupt hero shooters"
It's really telling that when asked "why would people be interested in this" the game's director immediately broke out the management speak and retention rates and KPIs. The whole thing felt like a pitch deck for investors, not a passion project.
Highguard had nothing to hook a broad audience who would get attached to specific characters, or the world they existed in, which is a recipe for hero shooter purgatory as Battlefield 2042 demonstrated. And its gameplay was bland and safe to an extreme degree.
Now don't get me wrong, Overwatch for instance was also a cynical product, it was Blizzard making their own TF2 down to ripping off whole characters, but Overwatch made sure to sell itself on its setting and characters first and its gameplay second and that set it apart.
Thinking about how a big reason for why Highguard failed was just the aggressive characterlessness of it all. Hero shooters live or die on their characters, not in a design sense but just in an audience appeal and likeability sense, and it just didn't have that, it was a cynical product.
