2026, as seen in stinking iris, ivy, holly, and pyracantha observed on winter dog walks. I got as far as 202 when the lurgy struck me down; finally Iโ€™ve finished the 6: wishing everyone brighter days, peace, and the joy of starting things and the relief of finishing them.

From dark academia to medievalcore: fashion is embracing our need for escapism | Lauren Cochcrane Much is written about how young people no longer form real-world communities. Well, fashion trends are a stark rejoinder to that, says senior Guardian fashion writer Lauren Cochrane

Things are bleak but if the โ€˜resurgence of librariesโ€™ is an outcome of medievalcore and dark academia trends then there is hope www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Geoffrey Luttrell, patron of the Luttrell Psalter, died 650 years ago today - 23 May 1345 also his 69th birthday. Ars longa, vita brevis. (British Library, Add MS 42130). (Speaking of brevis, Iโ€™ve posted a much longer blather about this on insta). Happy anniversary, Geoffrey Luttrell.

Glorious - Iโ€™d say it was Edenic but images of Eden never include topiary tools

Startling too in view of your next post, re UKRI โ€˜kickstarting economic growthโ€™. Events in Dundee will kick economic growth to the kerb in that great city, no?

I donโ€™t think I follow your analogy. Writing is to thinking, reading, and communicating โ‰  SLR is to phone camera. (Also, are everyoneโ€™s phone snaps good enough?)

Goyaโ€™s luminous salmon steaks are completely ravishing - like he painted them for an hour and a half, then ate them. One of the many extraordinary works on loan to @courtauld.bsky.social from the Oskar Reinhart Collection for Goya to Impressionism, opening on Valentineโ€™s Day.

[Scholarship is] where weโ€™re nearest to our humanness. Useless knowledge for its own sake. Useful knowledge is good, too, but itโ€™s for the faint-hearted, an elaboration of the real thing, which is only to shine some light, it doesnโ€™t matter where on what, itโ€™s the light itself, against the darkness

In Tom Stoppardโ€™s Invention of Love, the young A. E. Housman has a line I canโ€™t get out of my mind since seeing Hampstead Theatreโ€™s production last weekend (so much so that I looked it up):
