If governors opt in, tax dollars will go toward private school tuition for children, something many Democrats are uncomfortable with.
But if they say no, their states will lose out on federal cash that could help public school students, too. https://wapo.st/4uczHZB
Every American should be uncomfortable with this.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, Donald Trump ramped up his Iran war rhetoric with the threat, "Today Iran will be hit very hard!" and menaced the country with "complete destruction.
Had to doublecheck the date on this
Carole put her head band on and I shot a series of photos in and around the peace car. After we finished I introduced him to Carole and in the vernacular of the day, I think his mind was blown.β
Carole in Malibu, CA 1983. Photographer Jim Shea recalls the photo shoot β βWe drove into Malibu Canyon and came upon a Hippie in Malibu State Park with the painted peace car. I asked him if he would allow us to use his car to take some shots and he gave us the go ahead."

Trump vows to hit βvery hardβ after Iranβs president says he wonβt surrender
Really important piece by @gregsargent.bsky.social here, laying out the cascading series of failures that are driving the Trump administration to disaster
In an article in the Atlantic, Vivian Salama and Jonathan Lemire argue that Trump is not making any claims on Iranian oil and gas. But that's not quite true, is it?
"Senior Republicans privately expect Trump's administration to request tens of billions of dollars for the Middle East conflict and other military needs from Congress in the coming days, with some GOP lawmakers hearing estimates that the Pentagon is spending as much as $2 billion a day on the war."
I don't know what kind of endgame they can talk Trump into declaring victory, but it'll probably take until he's bored. So maybe Tuesday.
BRUSUELAS: At $125 per barrel, $4.25 per gallon of gasoline and 4% inflation, the U.S. economy βwill feel the pain quickly ..
β.. a risk that .. will negate the fiscal tailwind we were expecting from the One Big Beautiful Bill ..β

Trump: "I guess it would be illegal. Could you imagine? They spend millions and millions on a campaign. They're losing and they beg me for an endorsement. I give it, they win by 30 points. And I get nothing. If I could sell that -- is there a way? Is there a way I can get paid for that, Marco?"
Trump on Bessent: "He controls the purse strings of the country"
"War is mankind's most tragic and stupid folly; to seek or advise its deliberate provocation is a black crime against all men. Though you follow the trade of the warrior, you do so in the spirit of Washington -- not of Genghis Khan. For Americans, only threat to our way of life justifies resort to conflict." Graduation Exercises at the United States Military Academy, 6/3/47 "Possibly my hatred of war blinds me so that I cannot comprehend the arguments they adduce. But, in my opinion, there is no such thing as a preventive war. Although this suggestion is repeatedly made, none has yet explained how war prevents war. Worse than this, no one has been able to explain away the fact that war creates the conditions that beget war." Remarks at Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 10/19/50 [DDE's Pre-Presidential Papers, Principal File, Box
Was browsing the Eisenhower Library site this morning trying to find a quote I remembered.
President Eisenhower, WW2 military hero:
βIn my opinion, there is no such thing as a preventive warβ¦ none has yet explained how war prevents war.β
Remarkable: With support for the Iran war tanking, Trump is now throwing away the GOP's advantage on three core issues: Economy, immigration, national security.
A year ago it looked like he might be popular on all three. He lit it all on fire. 1/
(new piece)
newrepublic.com/article/2074...
When Trump took office, it looked plausible that the public would rally behind his tariffs and deportations. He had successfully (if wrongly) painted Biden as weak for pulling out of Afghanistan.
But now his numbers are abysmal on all three of these GOP issues. 2/
newrepublic.com/article/2074...
Hegseth and Stephen Miller ridiculed "rules of engagement" and vowed this war won't be "politically correct." Now it looks like we may have bombed an elementary school. Hegseth/Miller's certainty that their version of "strength" would have support is imploding. 3/
newrepublic.com/article/2074...
Support for the Iran war is at an abysmal 38%, per G. Elliott Morris's average of polls. That's the lowest initial support for a war in memory. Also, CNN finds 59% don't trust Trump to make right decisions with force in Iran. There's no rally-around-flag effect. 4/
newrepublic.com/article/2074...
The loss of 92,000 jobs in February is the latest sign that job creation has been low under Trump. Trust in him on the economy is abysmal. And as long as Stephen Miller's ethnic cleansing is Trump's immigration agenda, he'll continue tanking on that as well. 5/
newrepublic.com/article/2074...
I suspect Hegseth/Miller think a silent majority will rally to zero-sum nationalism (tariffs), treating all immigrants as criminals, and a kill-first-think-later military posture (what Hegseth calls the βwarrior ethicβ). It's a big deal that this isn't happening. 6/
