@danschindler.bsky.social, Michael Riegner, and I have co-edited a special issue for World Comparative Law / VRÜ on the theme of Public Law and Political Oppositions.

The symposium examines how law frames, enables, and constrains political opposition across different constitutional settings.

Glad to have on our journal this great article by @amalsethi.bsky.social on constitutional court appointments in Europe. The piece makes a case for more politics in appointment procedures and develops a template for European constitutional systems.

Don't miss it: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

My latest piece in the European Constitutional Law Review (@euconst.bsky.social) which makes a case for politicising appointments to constitutional courts in times when less politics in everything seems to be the norm.

One federal employee told me:

I just received the hr email asking for 5 things I did last week. This is a freaking trap because no matter what we respond, it can and likely will be used against us. If I want to resign, there is a process. If they want to fire me, there is a process. My colleagues are freaking out about this rightly so.

The Musk emails asking federal employees to explain their tasks are have already been sent. One described it to me as "a trap."

A forthcoming paper of mine in @euconst.bsky.social that makes a rather radical case for politicising appointments to Constitutional Courts in Europe in times when less politics and more technocracy seems to be the norm.

My latest piece in Global Constitutionalism. While it contributes to a somewhat niche debate, it might interest you if you are keen on the debates on the Basic Structure Doctrine or the Unconstitutional Constitutional Amendments Doctrine.

Last year, I had the privilege of attending the @icon-s.bsky.social Winter/Summer School organised by Prof Rosalind Dixon. It’s not just about research but also an incredible way for junior scholars to gain insights into academia in a supportive environment. Highly recommend applying!🍀🐨🦘💡🖌️

The second is an entry on Afghanistan for Judge Barrosa and Richard Albert's International Review of Constitutional Reform that four of my students and I wrote together. Perhaps a follow-up read to the above chapter on newer developments.

Two new works on Afghanistan — a jurisdiction I have become really interested in over the last couple of years:

The first is a chapter I wrote on Prospects For The Rule of Law under The Taliban for Judge Marek Safjan's edited volume on the Rule of Law.

Had hoped to make this into a longer piece but I am not sure where exactly I stand on the topic if I have to be honest.

Love that quote and throw it around a lot casually in other things but in this chapter I have actually not quoted many many people I would like to as I was working with a very small word limit.

Nice to see this. As a political scientist who studies constitutional law, my *perception* is that legal scholars *tend* to view law as the be-all, end-all. As I often say to my law friends, they're like hammers, and everything looks like a nail.

Wrote this chapter a while back and my views have moderately evolved since then but in the below piece I argue why constitutional scholars need to look at times beyond constitutional law as a solution to populist authoritarian projects.
