Increased efficiency of water use does not stimulate tree productivity - Nature Climate Change The authors theoretically delineate the maximal increases in tree growth that can be expected from increases in plant intrinsic water-use efficiency, which increases with rising CO2. They highlight en...

Extra CO2 stimulates #photosynthesis of trees and reduces water losses through transpiration. But does that stimulate growth of #tree stems? Our paper today in NatClimateChange led by Quan Zhang uses theory & data to show that strong growth stimulation is unlikely.๐ŸŒŽ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ

This is figure 1 from โ€œHuman biomass movement exceeds the biomass movement of all land animals combined.โ€ It shows total biomass movement of land animals and birds.

Human biomass movement may be up to 40 times greater than that of all land animals combined, according to research in Nature Ecology & Evolution. A second Nature Communications paper finds that wild mammal biomass has more than halved since 1850. go.nature.com/4oID33i go.nature.com/3LhSD7n ๐Ÿงช

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Some parts of #Munich heat up more than others โ€“ and this can be dangerous! Thanks to garbage trucks turned climate sensors, Munich can now implement targeted heat mitigation measures where they are needed most. (2/2) Using two #LargeEnsembles from the #DAMIP archive, we estimate UK summer heat-deaths under factual (all forcings) vs. counterfactual scenarios (natural-only, GHG-only, aerosols-only). We quantify the time of emergence (ToE) of climate signals on heat-deaths by forcing type.

(1/2) About 700 annual heat deaths (1961โ€“1980) were avoided by aerosol cooling. Then, rising GHGs + reduced aerosols drove sharp increases. Projections show a 2โ€“6-fold increase in heat deaths through GHGs by 2100. However, we did not look into the positive health impacts of aerosol reductions!

Colored line-plots showing the summer temperatures (May-September) from 1850-2100 for the UK (A) and the corresponding heat-related mortality (B) for the CanESM5 large ensemble (DAMIP archive). Colors refer to the applied factual (All, green) and counterfactual (Natural forcings only, blue; anthropogenic greenhouse gases only, red; and anthropogenic aerosols only, purple) forcings. Future projections are based on the SSP-245 pathway. Solid lines represent the mean of the large ensemble, i.e., the forced response. Shading in both panels refer to the 95% empirical confidence interval representing both, the uncertainties of the health risk function and natural climate variability (assessed as spread over the 10 members of the SMILE). See https://tinyurl.com/yzpy8v55 for details.
